My Wife Took A Phone Call During Dinner And Forgot I Speak Spanish
Chapter 1
The phone rang halfway through dinner.
Daniel Brooks looked up from his plate.
Across the table, his wife, Sophia, stared at the screen.
Her smile disappeared.
She picked up the phone immediately.
“I have to take this.”
Daniel nodded.
“Okay.”
Sophia stood and walked toward the kitchen.
Then she glanced back.
“Don’t wait for me.”
She disappeared around the corner.
Daniel continued eating.
They had been married for six years.
Most nights, dinner was the one time they put their phones away.
Tonight was different.
Sophia had been distracted all week.
She had been working late.
Taking calls in the hallway.
Closing her laptop whenever Daniel entered the room.
He had noticed.
He simply hadn’t asked.
Not yet.
Then he heard her voice.
Spanish.
Daniel froze.
Sophia knew he understood Spanish.
Or at least, she was supposed to.
His mother had grown up in Madrid.
Daniel had spoken Spanish since he was a child.
He wasn’t fluent enough to sound like a native speaker, but he understood it perfectly.
Sophia knew that.
At least, he thought she did.
He couldn’t hear every word from the dining room.
So he quietly stood.
He walked toward the kitchen.
Then stopped behind the wall.
Sophia was speaking softly.
“No, he doesn’t know.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
Daniel couldn’t hear everything.
But he understood enough.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Six years.”
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
Six years.
What had been going on for six years?
The man spoke again.
“And the account?”
Sophia whispered:
“It’s still under his name.”
Daniel gripped the edge of the wall.
“What about the child?”
Silence.
Then Sophia said:
“He still thinks she’s his.”
Daniel’s breathing stopped.
A child?
His mind raced.
They didn’t have children.
At least, not together.
Sophia had never told him about any child.
Then the voice said:
“You can’t keep lying forever.”
Sophia whispered:
“I know.”
Daniel stepped backward.
His hands were shaking.
He returned to the dining table before she noticed.
A minute later, Sophia entered.
She smiled.
“Sorry.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Who was that?”
She didn’t hesitate.
“My sister.”
Daniel knew she was lying.
He nodded anyway.
“Everything okay?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She sat down.
They resumed dinner.
But Daniel didn’t taste anything.
His mind kept replaying the conversation.
The account.
Six years.
The child.
She still thinks he’s hers.
He wasn’t sure who “she” was.
He wasn’t sure who “he” was.
But he knew one thing.
His wife had just had a secret conversation in a language she believed he couldn’t understand.
And she had no idea that every word had landed like a knife.
After dinner, Sophia went upstairs.
Daniel stayed in the kitchen.
He opened his laptop.
He searched their bank account.
Nothing looked unusual.
Then he checked a second account.
One he had forgotten existed.
An old joint account from the early years of their marriage.
There had been one transfer every month.
For six years.
Exactly the same amount.
$4,500.
The recipient name made his stomach tighten.
Mia Alvarez.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Who was Mia Alvarez?
He searched the name.
Nothing.
He checked the dates.
The payments started two months after his wedding.
Then he remembered something.
Sophia had once told him she had no family nearby.
No children.
No previous marriage.
No secrets.
At least, that’s what she had said.
Daniel closed the laptop.
Upstairs, Sophia laughed at something on her phone.
He stared at the ceiling.
Then whispered to himself:
“Who is Mia?”
He had no idea that by morning, he would know.
And wish he didn’t.
