She Accidentally Sent Her Breakup Text to a Stranger—He Replied, “Don’t Send That Yet.”

Chapter 3

Emily didn’t message Ethan the next morning.

She told herself it was because she needed space.

The truth was simpler.

She was embarrassed.

She had accidentally sent a deeply personal breakup message to a billionaire she’d never met.

Worse, she had told him things about her relationship she hadn’t told anyone.

At 9:14 a.m., her phone buzzed.

You disappeared.

Emily stared at it.

She typed:

I found out who you are.

And?

You’re Ethan Cole.

Yes.

You could have told me.

You didn’t ask.

She almost smiled.

You’re impossible.

I’ve heard that.

Then:

Are you okay?

Emily hesitated.

Not really.

Lunch?

She froze.

What?

You can say no.

Why would I have lunch with a man I accidentally sent my breakup text to?

Because coffee is less intimidating.

Emily laughed.

You’re strange.

So I’ve been told.

She shouldn’t have gone.

She knew that.

Yet at noon, she found herself standing outside a small café near her office.

Ethan was already there.

No entourage.

No expensive suit.

Just a dark sweater and jeans.

He stood when she approached.

“Emily?”

She nodded.

“You look normal.”

He smiled.

“You sound disappointed.”

“Maybe.”

They sat.

Emily stared at him.

“You’re really Ethan Cole.”

“Yes.”

“You look different from your interviews.”

“How?”

“Less terrifying.”

He laughed.

“I’ll take that.”

A server brought coffee.

Emily wrapped both hands around the cup.

“This is weird.”

“Very.”

“Why did you agree to meet me?”

“Because I was curious.”

“About me?”

“About the woman who sent a stranger a breakup text at midnight.”

She laughed.

“Fair.”

He became more serious.

“You don’t have to explain anything.”

“I know.”

“You can leave whenever you want.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

That made her relax.

They talked for an hour.

Not about Daniel.

About books.

Travel.

Bad movies.

Her bakery-loving grandmother.

His childhood.

His father.

By the time they left, Emily had forgotten to feel nervous.

Then she noticed someone across the street.

A man watching Ethan.

Ethan saw him too.

His expression changed.

“Do you know him?”

“No.”

The man disappeared into a car.

Emily frowned.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

She didn’t believe him.

That evening, Ethan texted:

Did you get home safely?

Yes.

Good.

Then:

How did your conversation with Daniel go?

Emily stared.

She hadn’t told him they were meeting again.

How do you know I saw him?

You said you needed to talk tonight.

Right.

She paused.

We broke up.

His response came slowly.

Are you okay?

I think so.

Then I’m glad.

Emily smiled.

But then another message appeared.

Don’t tell Daniel about me yet.

Emily frowned.

Why?

Because I think someone is watching him.

She stared.

What does that have to do with you?

A long pause.

More than you think.

She called.

He didn’t answer.

Then a message:

We need to talk in person.

The next evening, Ethan arrived at Emily’s apartment.

His expression was serious.

“Daniel isn’t cheating on you.”

Emily stared.

“What?”

“He’s involved in something he can’t get out of.”

“What?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because someone has been moving money through his company.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

Daniel worked for a financial consulting firm.

Not a small one.

A company that handled millions.

Ethan continued:

“And your name appears in their records.”

Emily went cold.

“My name?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because your accidental text may not have been an accident.”

She stared.

“What do you mean?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Your phone number may have been added to a contact list connected to a financial investigation.”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t understand.”

He sat down.

“Neither do I.”

“Then why are you involved?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Daniel works for a company that’s been trying to hurt mine.”

Emily’s heart raced.

“You think Daniel is involved?”

“I think someone is using him.”

“And you?”

“I think someone may be using you too.”

She stared at him.

“Why me?”

He looked at her.

“That’s what I intend to find out.”
