She Accidentally Sent Her Breakup Text to a Stranger—He Replied, “Don’t Send That Yet.”

Chapter 2

Emily spent the entire morning trying not to think about the stranger.

She failed.

His number sat at the top of her messages.

No name.

No photo.

Just a series of words that had somehow gotten under her skin.

At work, her best friend Lily noticed immediately.

“You look terrible.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Emily forced a smile.

Lily leaned closer.

“Daniel?”

Emily nodded.

“I’m done.”

“With him?”

“I think so.”

Lily frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Emily pulled out her phone.

“I wrote the breakup text.”

“You sent it?”

“To the wrong person.”

Lily stared.

“What?”

Emily showed her the conversation.

Lily read the messages.

Then looked up.

“Who is Ethan?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s concerning.”

“I know.”

“Why are you still talking to him?”

“I don’t know.”

Lily smiled.

“Maybe because he’s the first person in three years who’s actually telling you what you need to hear.”

Emily rolled her eyes.

“He’s a stranger.”

“Sometimes strangers are honest because they have nothing to gain.”

That sentence stayed with Emily.

At lunch, Daniel finally called.

“Hey.”

She looked at his name.

Her heart still reacted.

That was the problem.

“Where have you been?”

“Busy.”

“You’ve been busy for four days.”

“Work.”

“You could have texted.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Emily took a breath.

“Daniel, we need to talk.”

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

He paused.

“About what?”

“Our relationship.”

Another pause.

“Emily, not now.”

Her chest tightened.

“That’s exactly the problem.”

“What?”

“It’s never the right time.”

He sighed.

“Can we talk tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

They hung up.

Emily stared at the phone.

A message appeared from Ethan.

That sounded bad.

She froze.

She typed:

How do you know?

You said “our relationship.”

You saw the notification?

You took too long to reply afterward.

Emily frowned.

You’re observant.

Occupational hazard.

She smiled.

What do you do?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally:

I run a company.

What kind?

Logistics.

Emily laughed.

So you’re a businessman who gives relationship advice?

No.

Then what?

I give bad advice to strangers.

She laughed again.

It was the first genuine laugh she’d had in days.

Daniel arrived at her apartment that evening.

He looked tired.

Handsome.

Familiar.

Safe.

Emily remembered why she had loved him.

That’s what made the conversation so difficult.

He sat down.

“I know I’ve been distant.”

Emily nodded.

“Why?”

“I’ve had a lot going on.”

“Then tell me.”

He looked away.

“It’s complicated.”

“What is?”

“I can’t talk about it yet.”

Emily’s heart sank.

“You’ve been saying that for months.”

“I’ll explain.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

She stared at him.

“I don’t want soon anymore.”

He looked at her.

“What are you saying?”

Emily took out her phone.

The breakup message was still there.

She had never sent it.

“I’m saying I’m tired of waiting.”

Daniel stood.

“Emily…”

“I love you.”

He looked relieved.

Then she continued:

“But I don’t know if loving you is enough.”

His expression changed.

He reached for her hand.

“Give me a little more time.”

Emily almost cried.

There it was.

Again.

More time.

She pulled her hand away.

“That’s all you’ve asked for.”

He left.

Emily sat alone.

Ten minutes later, her phone buzzed.

Ethan.

Did you send it?

She stared.

No.

Why?

Because I wanted to see if he would fight for me.

The reply came slowly.

Did he?

Emily looked toward the door.

No.

A pause.

Then:

I’m sorry.

She swallowed.

Whoever you’re talking about in your story… did you lose her?

The typing indicator appeared.

Then:

Yes.

What happened?

No response for several minutes.

Finally:

I chose work. She chose someone else.

Emily frowned.

You regret it?

Every day.

She looked at his number.

She didn’t know this man.

But suddenly, she wanted to know him.

Maybe you should have fought.

His response came immediately.

Maybe.

Then:

That’s why I told you not to send that text.

Emily felt something strange in her chest.

This wasn’t about Daniel anymore.

She was talking to a man who understood regret.

A man who knew what it was like to lose someone because he waited too long.

She typed:

What’s your name?

A long pause.

Then:

Ethan Cole.

Emily’s eyes widened.

She knew that name.

Everyone in the city knew it.

Ethan Cole was the billionaire founder of Cole Transit Group.

She had seen him in business magazines.

The man who had built one of the largest private logistics companies in the country before turning thirty-five.

Emily stared at the phone.

Her accidental stranger wasn’t a stranger.

He was one of the most powerful men in the city.
