My Wife Told Everyone I Was ‘Just a Driver’ — Then I Found Out Her Secret Too.
Chapter 3
Daniel spent the next two days in silence.
He didn’t tell Claire.
He didn’t tell his friends.
He didn’t tell anyone.
Instead, he started investigating.
The man who sent the messages clearly knew more than Daniel.
But he also seemed to want Daniel to uncover something.
The first clue was Mark Dalton.
Daniel searched public records.
Mark had been an attorney.
Then an investment consultant.
Then suddenly, five years earlier, he vanished from the financial sector.
No explanation.
No interviews.
No public appearances.
Yet he was now meeting Claire privately.
Daniel looked deeper.
He discovered that Mark had once worked for Daniel’s former employer.
The same company where Daniel had worked before leaving finance.
That couldn’t be coincidence.
Daniel kept searching.
Then he found a connection to Claire.
Six years earlier, shortly before their wedding, Claire had transferred a large sum of money to an offshore trust.
The amount was $3.8 million.
Daniel stared at the number.
He had never known Claire had that kind of money.
He had assumed her career had built her wealth gradually.
But the transfer predated her promotion.
Something was wrong.
Then he found a second transfer.
One year after Sophie was born.
$2.1 million.
Again, the same trust.
Daniel leaned back.
His hands were shaking.
Claire had been hiding money.
But why?
His phone buzzed.
Another message.
Ask her about the Blackwood Account.
Daniel searched.
Nothing.
No public record.
He tried financial databases he still had access to through old contacts.
Eventually, one result appeared.
BLACKWOOD ACCOUNT — TRUSTEE: C. HARRISON
Daniel froze.
- Harrison.
Claire’s maiden name was Claire Harrison.
He searched deeper.
The account had been established nine months before Sophie was born.
Its current balance was listed as unavailable.
But the original funding amount was enough to make Daniel’s stomach turn.
$12 million.
His wife had a hidden twelve-million-dollar account.
And she had never told him.
Daniel sat in his car outside the bakery where he had gone to think.
A man approached the driver’s window.
Daniel rolled it down.
“Are you Daniel Brooks?”
“Yes.”
The man handed him an envelope.
“Your wife doesn’t know I gave you this.”
“Who are you?”
“Someone who worked with your father.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“My father?”
The man nodded.
“He wanted you to know the truth.”
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
His father.
Standing beside Richard Hale.
And between them was a younger Claire.
Daniel stared.
His father had died twelve years earlier.
Claire had never mentioned knowing him.
On the back of the photograph was a note.
She didn’t marry you by accident.
Daniel looked up.
The man was already walking away.
He jumped out of the car.
“Wait!”
The man turned.
“Why did she marry me?”
The stranger’s expression was grave.
“Because your father trusted her.”
Then he disappeared into the crowd.
Daniel returned to the car.
His mind raced.
Claire had known his father.
She had hidden millions.
She was meeting Mark Dalton.
And now someone was telling him their marriage had been part of something much larger.
That evening, Claire arrived home early.
Daniel was in the kitchen.
She kissed Sophie.
Then looked at him.
“Can we talk?”
Daniel nodded.
“I think we need to.”
She took a breath.
“I have something to tell you.”
Daniel’s heart pounded.
But before she could speak, someone knocked on the front door.
Three times.
Slowly.
Claire went completely pale.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is it?”
She whispered,
“I don’t know.”
Then the knocking came again.
And this time, a man’s voice followed.
“Claire, we need to finish what we started.”
