My Wife Told Everyone I Was ‘Just a Driver’ — Then I Found Out Her Secret Too.

Chapter 5

Daniel had never known fear like that.

Sophie was everything.

His entire world.

He didn’t care about money.

He didn’t care about Claire’s lies.

He didn’t care about the company.

He wanted his daughter back.

Claire was crying.

“I’ll find them.”

Daniel turned.

“You knew this could happen.”

“I never thought they’d target her.”

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

He grabbed his keys.

“Where is the Blackwood Account?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just said we need to find it.”

“The physical documents are in a safety deposit box.”

“Where?”

“At a bank downtown.”

They drove through the city.

Daniel called every contact he had.

Nobody answered.

Finally, Mark Dalton called.

“Where are you?”

“Find my daughter.”

Mark went silent.

“What happened?”

“She was taken.”

Mark swore.

“By who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You need to leave the city.”

“Not without Sophie.”

Mark sighed.

“Go to the old Mercer Building.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Your father kept an office there.”

“He worked somewhere else.”

“I know.”

Mark gave him an address.

“Room 417.”

They arrived at the abandoned building.

The elevator didn’t work.

They climbed four flights of stairs.

Room 417 was unlocked.

Inside was an old desk.

A filing cabinet.

And a photograph of Daniel as a child.

He stared.

“My father was here.”

Claire nodded.

“He kept a second office.”

Daniel opened the desk.

There was a notebook.

Inside were numbers.

Dates.

Names.

He recognized several company executives.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

Richard Hale.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You said your father was involved in this?”

“He was the chairman.”

“Why did my father trust him?”

“He didn’t.”

She took the notebook.

“Look.”

On the final page was one sentence.

RICHARD IS NOT THE MASTER. HE’S THE SHIELD.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who is?”

A phone rang.

Mark.

Daniel answered.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“The account isn’t at the bank.”

“Where is it?”

“Your father moved it.”

“Where?”

Mark hesitated.

“Into a company.”

“What company?”

“Harrison & Brooks.”

Daniel froze.

His own family business.

A company that had gone bankrupt after his father’s death.

Impossible.

The company had been dissolved.

Mark continued.

“There was one remaining asset.”

“What?”

“A bakery.”

Daniel frowned.

“A bakery?”

“The property.”

They drove to a small bakery on the edge of town.

The building was abandoned.

Inside, dust covered everything.

Daniel found an old safe beneath the floor.

He opened it.

Inside was the Blackwood Account file.

And a video recorder.

He pressed play.

His father’s voice filled the room.

“Daniel, if you’re watching this, I’m probably gone.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I need you to know something.”

His father paused.

“Claire Harrison was never sent to deceive you.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

His father’s recording continued.

“She was sent to save you.”

The recording stopped.

Claire began to cry.

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why did you call me just a driver?”

She whispered,

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That if I let anyone know how important you were to me, they’d use you against me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You made me feel worthless.”

“I know.”

Then the recorder turned on again automatically.

His father’s voice returned.

“There is one final thing you need to know.”

A pause.

“The person who killed me is still inside the company.”
