My Wife Told Everyone I Was ‘Just a Driver’ — Then I Found Out Her Secret Too.
Chapter 14
Three years after the scandal, Daniel and Claire returned to the hotel where everything had started.
The charity dinner was now run by their foundation.
Daniel wore a tailored suit.
Claire wore a simple black dress.
Sophie was older now.
She walked between them holding both their hands.
A journalist approached.
“Mr. Brooks, people know you as the former financial executive who was forced out of corporate life and became a driver.”
Daniel smiled.
“That’s part of my story.”
“Do you regret it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
He looked at Sophie.
“Because driving gave me time with her.”
Then the journalist turned to Claire.
“Mrs. Brooks, did you ever believe your husband was beneath your social circle?”
Claire shook her head.
“I was ashamed of my own fear, not of him.”
The answer became a headline the next day.
But Daniel didn’t care.
That night, they stood outside the hotel.
Claire took his hand.
“Do you ever wish you had confronted me sooner?”
“Yes.”
“I wish I’d told you everything sooner.”
“Then we’d have had fewer problems.”
“Probably.”
He smiled.
“But we might not have learned what mattered.”
She looked at him.
“What matters?”
“That trust isn’t something you demand.”
He squeezed her hand.
“It’s something you build.”
Claire leaned against him.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Sophie interrupted.
“Can we go home?”
Daniel laughed.
“Yes.”
They walked toward the car.
Daniel unlocked the driver’s door.
Claire smiled.
“Just a driver.”
He looked at her.
“Still?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
She kissed him.
“My husband.”
