My Wife Died 4 Years Ago — Then I Saw Her Holding Another Man’s Hand on a Luxury Cruise

Chapter 13

Claire finally told me everything.

The boating accident had been staged.

She hadn’t been alone that night.

My mother had met her.

She had warned Claire that Arthur was planning to kill both of us.

Claire escaped.

But the boat was destroyed.

Someone else died.

Arthur used the wreckage to create a false death.

Claire went into hiding.

My mother disappeared.

And I was left believing my wife was dead.

But Claire had one final secret.

The man who had been on the boat that night wasn’t Arthur.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been working beside us for years.

I asked:

“Who?”

Claire took out an old photograph.

It showed Adrian.

I stared.

“No.”

Claire nodded.

“Adrian was working for Arthur.”

My heart sank.

“But he protected you.”

“At first.”

“He saved us.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because he betrayed Arthur.”

Adrian had been responsible for the staged accident.

He had been ordered to kill Claire.

Instead, he helped her escape.

He had spent four years trying to dismantle the organization from inside.

The cruise had been his final attempt to expose Arthur.

But there was one thing he hadn’t told us.

Adrian had the original ledger.

The notebook we’d found was only a copy.

The real ledger contained one final name.

The person who had financed everything.

The person who had remained invisible.

Claire handed me the final page.

I read the name.

And my hands began shaking.

It was mine.

Not my father’s.

Not my mother’s.

Mine.

But the date beside my name was impossible.

It was from twenty years ago.

I was eight years old.

Claire looked at me.

“Daniel, someone used your identity before you were old enough to know what it meant.”

I stared at the page.

Suddenly, everything became clear.

My father had protected me.

My mother had manipulated me.

Claire had hidden from me.

Arthur had watched me.

And somewhere in the past, someone had built an entire criminal empire around a name that belonged to a child.

Mine.

I looked at Claire.

“Who was I supposed to become?”

She took my hand.

“Someone they could control.”

Outside, waves crashed against the shore.

Four years after my wife supposedly died, I had finally found her.

But finding her had only uncovered another mystery.

Because the woman I buried was alive.

The man who saved her was a traitor.

My dead family wasn’t dead.

And the greatest secret of all had been waiting under my own name since childhood.

The story of my wife’s death was over.

But the story of why they needed me alive had just begun.
