My father had left me a house in Tampa.

I had sold it six months after his death.

But Adrian said there was something I hadn’t found.

A hidden basement.

We reached shore the following morning.

I rented a car.

Elena stayed behind.

Adrian came with me.

Neither of us trusted the other.

But we had the same goal.

Find the truth.

The house had been renovated after I sold it.

But Adrian had tracked down the current owner.

We convinced him to let us inspect the basement.

Behind an old electrical panel, we found a steel box.

Inside was a hard drive.

My father’s handwriting was on it.

For Daniel.

I plugged it into a laptop.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Then one folder.

CLAIRE.

I opened it.

Photographs of my wife.

Documents.

Surveillance reports.

And one video.

Claire appeared on screen.

She looked frightened.

“Daniel, if you’re watching this, I’m probably already gone.”

My hands shook.

She continued.

“Please don’t trust anyone.”

A pause.

“Not Adrian.”

I looked at him.

His face went pale.

Claire continued:

“And not me.”

The video ended.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“I didn’t know about this.”

I looked at him.

“You’re lying.”

He shook his head.

“I swear.”

Then another file opened automatically.

A photograph appeared.

Claire standing beside my father.

Behind them was a warehouse.

The date was one month before her disappearance.

But there was something else.

A man stood in the background.

I recognized him.

My older brother, Michael.

Except Michael had died when he was seventeen.

At least, that was what my family had always told me.

I looked at Adrian.

“Who is that?”

He whispered:

“That’s not your brother.”
