My Ex-Husband Became My Boss | He Left Me 5 Years Ago, Now He Wants Me Back
Chapter 9
The board meeting exploded.
Edward demanded lawyers.
The directors shouted questions.
Employees gathered outside the conference room.
Emma remained calm.
She presented documents one by one.
Payments.
Shell companies.
Forged signatures.
Manipulated acquisitions.
The divorce lawyer’s payments.
Everything.
Edward denied it all.
Until Daniel walked in.
He placed an old recording on the table.
Richard’s voice filled the room.
“Keep them apart until the transfer is complete.”
Edward froze.
Emma looked at him.
“Still want to deny it?”
Edward stood.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
Edward looked at Alexander.
“You ruined everything.”
Alexander replied:
“No.”
“You were supposed to leave her.”
“I did.”
“You were supposed to disappear.”
“I came back.”
Edward’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand what your father built.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“I understand.”
“You were always weak.”
“No.”
Alexander looked at Emma.
“I was afraid.”
Edward laughed.
“And now?”
Alexander shook his head.
“Now I’m done being afraid.”
The authorities arrived.
Edward was arrested.
The acquisition was frozen.
The hidden accounts were seized.
The network began collapsing.
Emma thought it was over.
But there was one last problem.
The company was unstable.
Investors were panicking.
Employees feared layoffs.
The board wanted Alexander to resign.
Emma stood beside him.
“What are you going to do?”
“Stay.”
“Even after this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at her.
“Because I don’t want to run away again.”
Emma smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Together, they rebuilt the company.
Emma became chief strategy officer.
Sophie joined the foundation.
Alexander remained CEO.
But their relationship was still complicated.
They weren’t married.
Not anymore.
One evening, Alexander asked:
“Do you remember our wedding?”
“Yes.”
“What would you change?”
“Everything.”
He laughed.
“Fair.”
“I’d know the truth.”
“Yes.”
“I’d choose you differently.”
He became serious.
“What do you mean?”
“I’d choose you because I wanted to.”
He looked at her.
“And now?”
She stepped closer.
“Now I’m choosing you.”
He stared.
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
He laughed.
“That answer again.”
Emma smiled.
“I don’t want certainty.”
“What do you want?”
“A chance.”
He took her hand.
“Then you have one.”
They kissed.
It wasn’t a promise to erase the past.
It was a promise not to let it control the future.
But a week later, something changed.
Emma found an old document in her father’s files.
A letter.
Addressed to Alexander.
It was dated one month before their wedding.
The letter said:
If she ever learns the truth, don’t ask her to forgive you.
Let her choose.
Emma read it twice.
Then she realized something.
Her father had known exactly what would happen.
He had trusted Alexander to leave.
And trusted Emma to decide whether he should come back.
For the first time, she understood why Alexander had stayed away.
He wasn’t waiting to be forgiven.
He was waiting for her to choose.
