They began spending time together outside work.
Coffee.
Dinner.
Walks.
Simple things.

One evening, they went back to the restaurant where they had their first date.
The waiter recognized neither of them.
Emma laughed.
“That’s probably better.”
Alexander smiled.
“Why?”
“Because now we can pretend we’re strangers.”
He looked at her.
“Would you date me again?”

“Maybe.”
“That sounds promising.”
“Don’t get excited.”
He laughed.
For the first time in years, it felt easy.

It revealed that her father had been working with a private investigator.

Emma recognized it.

“He’s alive?”
“Yes.”
They tracked him down.
Daniel lived quietly outside the city.

“Richard wasn’t the leader.”
Emma froze.
“Who was?”
“Someone inside Reed Global.”
Alexander frowned.
“My company?”
“Yes.”
Daniel handed him a file.
“Your father suspected a board member.”
“Who?”
Daniel pointed.
Edward Reed.
Alexander’s uncle.
Emma looked at Alexander.
“Your uncle?”
“My father’s brother.”
“He was on the board?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“He controlled the family trust.”
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Edward had been manipulating the company for years.
Richard had worked for him.
The fraudulent transactions had been ordered by Edward.
He had threatened Emma.
He had separated her from Alexander.
And when Alexander refused to cooperate, Edward had tried to destroy him too.
Emma looked at Alexander.
“You thought Richard was responsible.”
“I was wrong.”
Daniel said:
“Edward is planning one last move.”
“What?”
“The company merger.”
The same acquisition Emma was leading.
Everything suddenly made sense.

“We need to stop the acquisition,” Emma said.
Alexander nodded.

To her former divorce lawyer.

She looked at Alexander.
“We have enough.”
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because if we accuse him without proving the full network, he’ll escape.”
Emma nodded.
“Then we finish it.”
The next morning, Edward called a board meeting.
He announced that Alexander had become emotionally unstable.
He proposed removing him as CEO.
Emma sat in the room.
Everyone looked at her.
Edward smiled.
“Emma, perhaps you should step away from this project.”
She stood.
“No.”
Edward’s smile vanished.
“I don’t think you understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
She placed a folder on the table.
“I’m the controlling beneficiary of the Carter-Reed trust.”
The room went silent.
Edward stared.
“You don’t have authority.”
“I do.”
She placed another document beside it.
“And I have proof of your financial transactions.”

Alexander looked at her.
She smiled.
