My Ex-Husband Became My Boss | He Left Me 5 Years Ago, Now He Wants Me Back

Chapter 4

Emma showed Alexander the photograph.

His expression changed immediately.

“Where did you get this?”

“It was on my desk.”

He took it.

“Did anyone see you receive it?”

“No.”

“Did you touch the envelope?”

“Yes.”

He sighed.

“I’m calling security.”

“This is exactly what happened five years ago, isn’t it?”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Who threatened me?”

“I never found out.”

“Then why didn’t you go to the police?”

“I did.”

“And?”

“Nothing.”

Emma stared.

“Then why did you leave?”

Alexander looked exhausted.

“My father was being investigated.”

“For fraud?”

“Yes.”

“But he wasn’t guilty.”

“No.”

“Then who was?”

Alexander hesitated.

“A senior executive.”

“Who?”

“Richard Hale.”

Emma recognized the name.

“Your father’s chief financial officer?”

“Yes.”

“Is he still with Reed Global?”

“No.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

She stared.

“What?”

“He died three years ago.”

“How?”

“Car accident.”

Emma felt a chill.

“Was it really an accident?”

Alexander shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

They returned to the office.

Security reviewed the camera footage.

The envelope had been placed on Emma’s desk at 2:17 a.m.

No employee appeared.

The hallway camera showed nothing.

The camera had been disabled for exactly nine minutes.

Alexander looked at the footage.

“This isn’t random.”

Emma crossed her arms.

“You think they’re back.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you still here?”

“Because I have unfinished business.”

“With them?”

“With you.”

Emma looked away.

“I don’t know if I can trust you.”

“You shouldn’t.”

That surprised her.

“What?”

“You shouldn’t trust me because I ask you to.”

He handed her the photograph.

“Trust me when I prove I’m telling the truth.”

She studied him.

“What happens now?”

“We investigate.”

Together, they began examining the old financial records.

The fraud had involved millions of dollars.

Money had disappeared through shell companies.

Several businesses had been used as fronts.

One company kept appearing.

Hartwell Holdings.

Emma recognized the name.

“That’s my father’s company.”

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

“My father didn’t own it.”

“He was a consultant.”

“Then why is it involved?”

“Because someone used his identity.”

Emma stared.

“Someone forged his signature?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To move money.”

They found one transfer dated two weeks before their wedding.

$12 million.

From Reed Global.

To Hartwell Holdings.

Then back again.

Emma looked at Alexander.

“What is that?”

“A laundering transaction.”

“Who authorized it?”

He pointed to the signature.

Richard Hale.

Emma sat down.

“This is why my father was threatened.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

“His business collapsed.”

“He died believing he’d failed.”

Alexander looked at her.

“He didn’t fail.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“He thought he had.”

“I know.”

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“After the divorce.”

Emma looked up.

“You contacted me?”

“Yes.”

“I never received anything.”

Alexander stared.

“What?”

“I sent letters.”

“How many?”

“Six.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“I never got them.”

They looked at each other.

Someone had intercepted them.

Someone had kept them apart.

Five years of silence.

Not because Alexander didn’t try.

Because someone made sure she believed he had abandoned her.

Emma whispered:

“Who?”

Alexander looked toward the door.

“I think I know.”

He opened another file.

A photograph appeared.

A man.

Richard Hale.

Alive.

Emma’s breath stopped.

“That can’t be him.”

Alexander nodded.

“It shouldn’t be.”
