My Ex-Husband Became My Boss | He Left Me 5 Years Ago, Now He Wants Me Back
Chapter 7
The discovery of the trust changed everything.
Emma became the controlling beneficiary of a fortune she never knew existed.
But she didn’t care about the money.
She cared about why her father had hidden it.
The trust documents contained dozens of pages.
Most were ordinary.
Then they found one paragraph.
If danger returns, transfer control to Emma and Alexander jointly.
Emma stared.
“Jointly?”
“Yes,” Alexander said.
“Why would my father do that?”
“To force us to work together.”
Emma laughed.
“He planned our marriage like a business deal.”
“Apparently.”
She looked at him.
“Did he know we’d fall in love?”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why create joint control?”
“To prevent either family from taking everything.”
Emma continued reading.
The trust required both of them to approve any major transaction.
Neither could act alone.
Her father had designed it as a safeguard.
But someone had discovered another loophole.
The trust could be challenged if the marriage ended.
Emma’s eyes widened.
“That’s why they wanted the divorce.”
“Yes.”
“Because once we divorced, they could take control.”
Alexander nodded.
“And Richard used that against us.”
Emma sat down.
“So our marriage was worth more to them than we knew.”
“Yes.”
A lawyer arrived.
He confirmed the documents.
The trust was legitimate.
The fortune was real.
But there was another clause.
A third beneficiary existed.
Emma frowned.
“Who?”
The lawyer looked uncomfortable.
“Your father’s second daughter.”
Emma froze.
“I don’t have a sister.”
The lawyer shook his head.
“You do.”
The room went silent.
“What?”
“Your father had a child before your mother.”
Emma stared.
“How old is she?”
“Thirty-one.”
“Where is she?”
The lawyer handed her a file.
A name.
Sophie Carter.
Emma looked at Alexander.
“This is impossible.”
They tracked Sophie to a small town.
She lived quietly.
Worked at a bookstore.
Had no idea she was wealthy.
When Emma met her, she expected competition.
Instead, Sophie looked terrified.
“I don’t want anything from you.”
Emma smiled.
“Neither of us knew.”
Sophie looked at the trust papers.
“Why would your father keep me secret?”
Emma didn’t know.
Then Sophie showed her a letter.
It was from their father.
He had loved her mother.
But he had been married to another woman.
When Sophie was born, he chose to keep her hidden because his business partners had threatened to use her.
The same network.
The same people.
The same fear.
Sophie had been protected.
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“My father was trying to protect both of us.”
“Yes.”
Sophie nodded.
“But he still made mistakes.”
Emma agreed.
The two sisters sat quietly.
For the first time, Emma felt like her family was coming back together.
Then Sophie noticed Alexander.
“You’re the husband.”
Emma laughed softly.
“Ex-husband.”
Sophie looked between them.
“Not for long, I hope.”
Emma froze.
Alexander looked away.
Sophie smiled.
“You two still love each other.”
Neither answered.
That night, Emma returned home.
Alexander was waiting outside.
“I didn’t know you had a sister.”
“Neither did I.”
He smiled.
“How did it go?”
“Better than expected.”
Then he looked serious.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“I want to apologize.”
“Again?”
“Yes.”
He took a breath.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“But I want another chance.”
She stared.
“Another chance at what?”
“At being your husband.”
Her heart beat faster.
“You can’t ask me that.”
“I know.”
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You left.”
“Yes.”
“And now you’re my boss.”
He smiled faintly.
“That’s complicated.”
Emma looked at him.
“You know what the worst part is?”
“What?”
“Part of me never stopped loving you.”
Alexander said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“That’s why I’m still angry.”
