I Woke Up Holding My Nurse’s Hand… Then She Whispered, “You Still Don’t Remember Me?”
Chapter 8
Daniel’s memories didn’t return all at once.
They came in fragments.
A coffee shop.
A rainy evening.
Emily sitting beside him.
Their first date.
A terrible movie they both hated.
A road trip.
Her falling asleep against his shoulder.
Daniel remembered all of it.
But there was still one missing piece.
The night of the accident.
The investigators had arrested Greg.
The financial fraud was exposed.
But they still needed to know exactly what happened.
Daniel returned to the parking garage with Emily.
The place looked smaller than he remembered.
He stood beneath the lights.
“I was here.”
Emily held his hand.
“Take your time.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Rain.
His phone ringing.
Rachel’s voice.
“Daniel, you need to leave.”
He remembered running.
Greg following.
A second car.
A truck.
Then…
A woman.
Standing beside the road.
Emily.
She had been there.
Daniel opened his eyes.
“You were at the accident.”
Emily nodded.
“I followed you.”
“Why?”
“Because you sounded scared.”
“What happened?”
“I saw Greg’s car.”
Daniel stared.
Emily continued.
“You drove away. Greg followed.”
She wiped her eyes.
“I called the police.”
“Then?”
“Your car crashed.”
Daniel remembered.
Emily running through the rain.
Holding his head.
Calling his name.
“Daniel!”
He remembered her hand.
The same hand he had woken holding.
He remembered her whispering:
“Please don’t leave me.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
He was crying.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You saved me.”
Emily shook her head.
“The paramedics saved you.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You stayed.”
She smiled.
“Of course.”
He took her hand.
“I remember.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
“Everything.”
She stared at him.
Daniel laughed through tears.
“I remember your coffee order.”
Emily started crying.
“I remember our first kiss.”
She covered her face.
“I remember you stealing the blankets.”
She laughed.
“You deserved that.”
Daniel pulled her closer.
“I remember loving you.”
Emily looked at him.
“And now?”
Daniel smiled.
“Now I remember why.”
They kissed.
For the first time in months, neither of them was afraid.
But there was still one question.
Why had Daniel’s memory disappeared so completely?
The neurologist explained that the trauma had created a protective response.
Daniel had associated the missing memories with extreme fear.
His mind had essentially locked them away.
But there was another possibility.
The doctor showed him an old scan.
“There was an unusual pattern.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“The injury was serious, but your recovery was remarkable.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
Maybe his mind hadn’t forgotten because something was broken.
Maybe it had forgotten because remembering everything at once would have destroyed him.
