I Woke Up Holding My Nurse’s Hand… Then She Whispered, “You Still Don’t Remember Me?”
Chapter 13
Ten years after the accident, Daniel returned to the hospital one final time.
He walked through the hallway where everything had changed.
Emily walked beside him.
They stopped outside the old room.
It was empty.
Daniel opened the door.
He remembered waking up.
The ceiling.
The beeping machine.
The dry throat.
And Emily’s hand.
He smiled.
“Do you remember what you whispered?”
Emily looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You asked if I still didn’t remember you.”
She laughed.
“I was terrified.”
“I know.”
Daniel took her hand.
“I didn’t understand why you looked at me like that.”
“Because you were everything to me.”
Daniel looked into her eyes.
“And now?”
Emily smiled.
“You’re still everything.”
Daniel kissed her forehead.
Outside the hospital, the afternoon sun was warm.
They walked slowly toward the parking lot.
Daniel stopped.
“Emily?”
“Yes?”
“If I ever forget again…”
She smiled.
“I know.”
She took his hand.
“I’ll remind you.”
Daniel smiled.
“Good.”
They continued walking.
The accident had taken months of his life.
It had stolen memories.
It had exposed betrayal.
It had nearly destroyed everything he had built.
But it had also revealed something Daniel might never have understood otherwise.
Memory was fragile.
Love wasn’t.
Sometimes the person you wake up beside is not someone you remember.
Sometimes they’re the person who remembers for both of you.
And sometimes, the hand you wake up holding is the same hand that refused to let you disappear.
Daniel looked at Emily as they walked beneath the afternoon sun.
This time, there was no fear.
No missing memory.
No unanswered question.
He remembered her.
Every moment.
Every laugh.
Every argument.
Every kiss.
Every ordinary day.
But he knew now that even if all of it disappeared tomorrow…
He would still reach for her hand.
