The hospital locker was in an old staff corridor.
Emily knew the area.
They searched after midnight.
Daniel remembered the number.
Locker 214.
Emily opened it.
Inside was a small black USB drive.
Daniel picked it up.
His hands trembled.
“That’s it.”
Emily looked around.
“Let’s leave.”
They didn’t.
Because someone was standing at the end of the corridor.
Greg.
He smiled.
“I wondered when you’d find it.”
Daniel stepped in front of Emily.
“What did you do?”
Greg laughed.
“Nothing you can prove.”
Daniel held up the USB.
“This proves everything.”
“No.”
Greg shook his head.
“That proves nothing.”
“You stole twelve million dollars.”
“I borrowed company funds.”
“Without authorization.”
“Your signature approved the transfers.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Greg smiled.
“You don’t remember signing.”
Daniel stared.
Greg continued.
“You were under stress. You were drinking. You were making terrible decisions.”
“That’s a lie.”
“Is it?”
Greg stepped closer.
“That’s why your board believed me.”
Daniel’s anger grew.
“Why did you try to kill me?”
Greg’s expression changed.
“I didn’t.”
“You were at the parking garage.”
“I was trying to stop you from ruining everything.”
“You chased me.”
“You ran.”
Daniel remembered.
Greg’s car.
Headlights.
Rain.
A truck.
Greg’s voice:
“Give me the drive!”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“You caused the crash.”
Greg shook his head.
“Your memory is unreliable.”
Emily stepped forward.
“We have the USB.”
Greg smiled.
“Then open it.”
Daniel connected the drive to his phone.
Files appeared.
Financial transfers.
Contracts.
Emails.
Then a video.
Daniel opened it.
The recording showed Greg meeting Rachel.
They discussed moving company funds.
They discussed Daniel.
And then Rachel said:
“If he finds out, he’ll go to the police.”
Greg answered:
“Then make sure he can’t.”
Daniel stared.
The room went silent.
Greg’s face changed.
Emily immediately called security.
Greg lunged toward the phone.
Daniel stepped back.
Security officers arrived.
Greg was detained.
Rachel was arrested later that morning.
But the video contained something else.
A final file.
DANIEL — OPEN ONLY IF I FORGET.
Daniel clicked it.
A recording of himself appeared.
He looked tired.
But calm.
“If you’re watching this, something happened.”
Daniel on the screen looked directly into the camera.
“You may not remember Emily.”
Daniel looked at her.
The recording continued.
“But you should know something.”
The younger Daniel smiled.
“She saved my life.”
Emily covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“And if I lose my memory, don’t let me lose her.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
His eyes filled with tears.
The recording ended.
Emily was crying.
Daniel reached for her hand.
This time, she didn’t hesitate.
She held it tightly.
And something inside Daniel finally broke open.
Not a memory.
A feeling.
