I Woke Up Holding My Nurse’s Hand… Then She Whispered, “You Still Don’t Remember Me?”
Chapter 4
Greg Walker had been Daniel’s business partner for eight years.
They owned a successful architectural firm together.
At least, that was what Greg told him.
Daniel didn’t remember the last three years.
Greg visited often.
He brought flowers.
He brought paperwork.
He talked about business.
But something about him made Daniel uncomfortable.
On Monday morning, Greg placed a folder beside the bed.
“You need to sign these.”
Daniel looked at the documents.
“What are they?”
“Routine company matters.”
“Why do I need to sign them now?”
“Because you’re recovering.”
Daniel didn’t touch them.
“I’ll have my attorney review them.”
Greg smiled.
“Daniel, we’ve been partners for years.”
“I know.”
“Then trust me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I don’t remember enough to trust anyone.”
Greg’s smile disappeared.
“That’s unfortunate.”
Emily entered the room.
Greg immediately changed his expression.
“Morning.”
Emily nodded.
“Mr. Walker.”
Greg looked at Daniel.
“I’ll come back later.”
He left.
Daniel watched the door close.
“What’s wrong with him?”
Emily hesitated.
“What do you mean?”
“He makes you nervous.”
Emily looked at him.
“You noticed?”
“Yes.”
She sighed.
“Before the accident, you didn’t trust him either.”
Daniel sat upright.
“What?”
“You were investigating something.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“Emily.”
She looked toward the hallway.
“I shouldn’t talk about this here.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Then tell me somewhere private.”
That evening, Emily met him in the hospital courtyard.
She sat beside him.
“You were planning to leave your company.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“You told me someone was stealing from it.”
“Who?”
“You never told me.”
“Why not?”
“Because you said you needed proof.”
Daniel looked down.
“Do you have any?”
Emily reached into her bag.
She handed him a photograph.
It showed Daniel standing outside a restaurant with a woman.
Daniel stared.
He didn’t recognize her.
“Who is she?”
Emily’s face hardened.
“Rachel Walker.”
“Greg’s wife?”
Emily nodded.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“Why was I meeting her?”
“That’s what I was trying to figure out.”
Daniel turned the photo over.
On the back was a date.
Three months before his accident.
Then something happened.
A memory flashed.
A restaurant.
Rachel whispering:
“You need to stop him.”
Daniel blinked.
Emily leaned closer.
“What?”
“I heard something.”
“What?”
“She said… stop him.”
Emily’s face went pale.
Daniel suddenly remembered another detail.
A black folder.
A USB drive.
A parking garage.
Then pain exploded behind his eyes.
He grabbed his head.
Emily held him.
“Daniel!”
He struggled to breathe.
“I had evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“I don’t know.”
The memory vanished.
Emily stayed beside him.
Daniel looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Greg?”
She nodded.
“Why?”
Emily whispered:
“Because before your accident, you told me that if anything happened to you, I should never trust him.”
Daniel stared at her.
The words felt familiar.
Terrifyingly familiar.
Then he remembered something else.
He had given Emily a key.
And he had told her:
“If I forget, you have to make me remember.”
