I Woke Up Holding My Nurse’s Hand… Then She Whispered, “You Still Don’t Remember Me?”
Chapter 10
A year after the accident, Daniel and Emily returned to Mercy General Hospital.
They stood in the same room where Daniel had first opened his eyes.
The same white walls.
The same window.
The same chair.
Daniel smiled.
“I hated this room.”
Emily laughed.
“You don’t anymore?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I woke up here.”
Emily looked at him.
“And?”
Daniel smiled.
“Holding your hand.”
She squeezed his fingers.
“Technically, you were holding mine.”
Daniel laughed.
“That sounds like something you would correct.”
“It is.”
They sat quietly.
A new patient was brought into the room.
An elderly man.
His daughter followed him.
Daniel watched them.
The daughter looked terrified.
Emily noticed.
“You okay?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yeah.”
He stood and approached them.
The daughter looked surprised.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel smiled.
“I’m Daniel.”
She introduced herself.
Her father was unconscious.
She was terrified.
Daniel knew that feeling.
He sat beside her.
“I’ve been where you are.”
She looked at him.
“What happened?”
Daniel glanced at Emily.
“Someone stayed.”
The daughter began crying.
Daniel told her:
“Don’t be afraid to talk to him.”
“But he can’t hear me.”
“Maybe he can.”
Emily smiled.
Daniel understood something that day.
He hadn’t survived simply to return to his old life.
He had survived to understand what mattered.
People.
Love.
Second chances.
And the quiet presence of someone willing to hold your hand when you couldn’t hold onto anything else.
