Billionaire Dad Pretended to Be Broke to Test His Daughter’s Nanny—She Had No Idea
Chapter 1
At 6:15 every morning, Daniel Whitmore stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of his Manhattan penthouse and watched the city wake beneath him.
From the forty-second floor, New York looked almost peaceful.
Traffic crawled along Fifth Avenue. Steam rose from street grates. Yellow cabs slipped between black SUVs, and the first light of morning reflected off thousands of windows.
Daniel owned three buildings in Manhattan.
Two private jets.
A ranch in Montana.
A yacht he rarely used.
And a technology company valued at more than four billion dollars.
But none of those things mattered to him that morning.
His attention was fixed on the photograph sitting on his desk.
A little girl with dark brown hair smiled at the camera.
Her name was Lily.
She was seven years old.
And she was the most important person in Daniel’s life.
His wife, Rebecca, had died three years earlier after a sudden illness. Since then, Daniel had done everything possible to protect Lily.
Perhaps too much.
Lily had tutors.
Private doctors.
Security.
A chauffeur.
A carefully selected school.
And, most importantly, a nanny.
Her name was Emma Carter.
Emma was twenty-eight.
She had been working for the Whitmore family for eight months.
Daniel had hired her after interviewing twenty-seven candidates.
She had excellent references.
A degree in early childhood education.
First-aid certification.
And no interest whatsoever in Daniel’s wealth.
That last part was what initially impressed him.
But recently, Daniel had begun noticing something.
Lily trusted Emma more than anyone.
She talked to Emma about her mother.
She cried in Emma’s arms.
She even asked Emma to stay beside her when she had nightmares.
Daniel was grateful.
But he was also afraid.
He had seen what money did to people.
After Rebecca died, distant relatives suddenly appeared.
Old acquaintances asked for loans.
Business partners invited themselves into his private life.
Even people who claimed to love Lily sometimes treated her like an inheritance waiting to happen.
Daniel couldn’t allow another person into his daughter’s life without knowing their true intentions.
So he made a decision.
A decision that would eventually change all three of their lives.
He would pretend to be broke.
Not temporarily for an afternoon.
Not as a harmless joke.
For thirty days.
He would leave the penthouse.
Drive an old pickup truck.
Wear cheap clothes.
Move into a modest apartment.
And tell Emma that his business had collapsed.
Then he would watch.
If Emma stayed because she loved Lily, Daniel would know he could trust her.
If she disappeared the moment the money was gone, he would know exactly what she had been waiting for.
There was only one problem.
Daniel didn’t realize that Emma had already made her own decision.
She had no intention of leaving Lily.
No matter how poor Daniel claimed to be.
That evening, Daniel called his lawyer, Marcus Reed.
“I need you to arrange something.”
Marcus listened.
Then stared at him.
“You’re serious?”
“Completely.”
“Daniel, you’re worth billions.”
“That’s precisely why I need to know who I can trust.”
Marcus sighed.
“And what happens when the nanny finds out?”
Daniel looked at Lily’s photograph.
“She won’t.”
He paused.
“Not until I’m sure.”
The next morning, Daniel told Lily they were moving.
She looked confused.
“Why?”
“Things are changing.”
“Is Daddy in trouble?”
Daniel forced a smile.
“Maybe.”
Lily’s eyes filled with fear.
Emma immediately knelt beside her.
“Hey.”
Lily looked at her.
“We’re going to be okay.”
Emma glanced toward Daniel.
She saw something strange in his expression.
Not panic.
Not desperation.
Calculation.
She didn’t understand it.
But she remembered it.
Because within twenty-four hours, the billionaire Daniel Whitmore would disappear.
And a supposedly bankrupt single father named Dan Wilson would take his place.
