Billionaire Dad Pretended to Be Broke to Test His Daughter’s Nanny—She Had No Idea

Chapter 8

Emma returned to the Whitmore household under new terms.

She wasn’t merely a nanny anymore.

Daniel gave her complete authority over Lily’s daily care.

But more importantly, he stopped treating her like an employee.

He treated her like family.

The first few weeks were awkward.

Emma still remembered the lie.

Daniel still worried that one wrong move would push her away.

Lily, however, was delighted.

She became the bridge between them.

One Saturday morning, she dragged them both into the kitchen.

“We’re making pancakes.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“Do you know how?”

Emma laughed.

“Better than you.”

“I can cook.”

“You burned pasta.”

“Once.”

“Twice.”

Lily giggled.

The apartment filled with laughter.

For the first time in months, it felt normal.

Then Daniel received a business call.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

He listened.

“How much?”

He went silent.

Emma noticed.

When he hung up, she asked:

“Problem?”

“One of my companies lost a major contract.”

“Can you recover?”

“Probably.”

“But?”

“It’s going to cost a lot.”

Emma smiled.

“Then we’ll figure it out.”

Daniel looked at her.

The words reminded him of the first week.

He smiled.

“You’ve said that before.”

“So have you.”

He laughed.

Later that evening, Daniel took Emma to dinner.

Not an expensive restaurant.

A small Italian place in Brooklyn.

Emma looked surprised.

“I thought billionaires ate somewhere fancy.”

“Some do.”

“You don’t?”

“I’ve eaten enough fancy food.”

They sat across from each other.

Daniel looked nervous.

Emma noticed.

“Why are you nervous?”

“I want to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Would you consider staying permanently?”

Emma raised an eyebrow.

“As Lily’s nanny?”

“As part of our family.”

She didn’t answer.

Daniel continued.

“Not because I need someone to take care of Lily.”

“Then why?”

“Because she loves you.”

Emma smiled.

“And?”

He hesitated.

“Because I do too.”

Emma froze.

The restaurant noise seemed to disappear.

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t expect you to say anything.”

“Daniel.”

“I know I have no right to ask.”

“Daniel.”

He looked up.

Emma’s eyes were wet.

“I was waiting for you to say it.”

He stared.

“You were?”

She nodded.

“Because I love you too.”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Emma laughed through her tears.

“You really are terrible at this.”

“At what?”

“Being honest.”

He smiled.

“I’m learning.”

She reached across the table.

He took her hand.

There was no dramatic proposal.

No diamond ring.

No photographers.

Just two people sitting across from each other, finally admitting what had been growing between them.

But there was still one person who mattered most.

Lily.

When they returned home, Lily was waiting.

“Did you get married?”

Emma laughed.

“No.”

“Then why are you holding hands?”

Daniel looked at Emma.

Emma looked at him.

“Because we’re trying something.”

Lily smiled.

“Does that mean Emma stays?”

Daniel nodded.

“If she wants to.”

Lily hugged them both.

“I want her to.”

They laughed.

That night, Daniel stood in the hallway watching Emma tuck Lily into bed.

He realized something.

He had started the experiment believing wealth made people difficult to understand.

But the truth was simpler.

People weren’t defined by what they owned.

They were defined by what they refused to abandon.

Emma had refused to abandon Lily.

And now Daniel refused to abandon Emma.
