Billionaire Dad Pretended to Be Broke to Test His Daughter’s Nanny—She Had No Idea

Chapter 5

The emergency room was crowded.

Monitors beeped.

Doctors moved quickly between rooms.

Lily lay beneath a thin blanket, pale and exhausted.

Emma hadn’t left her side.

Daniel stood near the window.

His instinct was to call his private physician.

His security team.

His personal driver.

His entire network.

But he stopped.

He couldn’t reveal who he was.

Not yet.

So he stood there helplessly.

A doctor entered.

“She has a viral infection.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Is she going to be okay?”

“Yes.”

Emma closed her eyes in relief.

Daniel sat beside Lily.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily looked at him.

“For what?”

“For everything.”

She didn’t understand.

“You didn’t make me sick.”

Daniel smiled weakly.

“No.”

Emma looked at him.

“She’s going to be fine.”

He nodded.

After several hours, Lily fell asleep.

Emma remained beside her.

Daniel sat across the room.

“Why do you care this much?”

Emma looked at him.

“Because she’s a child.”

“That’s it?”

“Isn’t that enough?”

Daniel looked down.

“You could find another job.”

“I could.”

“You could work for someone who pays you properly.”

“Probably.”

“Then why stay?”

Emma was quiet.

“Because I promised her.”

“Promised what?”

“That I wouldn’t leave.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“When?”

“The first night after her mother died.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

Emma’s eyes softened.

“She asked me whether everyone she loved would disappear.”

Daniel remembered that night.

He had been buried in grief.

He had barely spoken.

He hadn’t known Lily had asked Emma that question.

“What did you tell her?”

“I told her I couldn’t promise what other people would do.”

Emma paused.

“But I could promise what I would do.”

Daniel stared.

“What did you promise?”

“That I’d stay.”

Daniel looked away.

Tears filled his eyes.

He had spent three years trying to protect Lily from losing people.

And Emma had quietly done exactly what he wanted.

Without money.

Without recognition.

Without asking for anything.

Daniel realized his test had become irrelevant.

The answer had been there all along.

Emma loved Lily.

Not because she was rich.

Not because she was a Whitmore.

Because she was a little girl who had lost her mother and needed someone.

That night, after Lily was discharged, Daniel drove them home.

Emma sat in the back with Lily.

She had fallen asleep against Emma’s shoulder.

Daniel watched them through the rearview mirror.

He wanted to confess.

But something stopped him.

Fear.

Not fear that Emma would leave because he was poor.

Fear that she would leave because he had lied.

When they arrived home, Emma carried Lily upstairs.

Daniel stayed in the kitchen.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

“You need to tell her.”

“I know.”

“Tomorrow.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“I’ve never been this afraid.”

Marcus laughed softly.

“That’s because this time you’re not protecting money.”

Daniel hung up.

The next morning, he would tell Emma everything.

But Daniel didn’t know that Emma had already begun to suspect the truth.

She had noticed that the “bankrupt” man somehow knew how to handle hospital paperwork.

He had no trouble contacting specialists.

He spoke like a businessman.

And when he thought nobody was watching, he still carried himself like someone accustomed to being obeyed.

Emma wasn’t sure what he was hiding.

But she knew one thing.

Daniel Wilson was not who he claimed to be.
