Billionaire Dad Pretended to Be Broke to Test His Daughter’s Nanny—She Had No Idea
Chapter 9
Their relationship didn’t become easy overnight.
Emma still had questions.
Daniel still had habits to unlearn.
And Lily sometimes worried that everything could disappear again.
So they moved slowly.
Daniel introduced Emma to his closest friends.
She met his lawyer, Marcus.
His business partners.
His parents’ old friends.
And eventually, the people who had been part of his life before Rebecca died.
Some welcomed her.
Others didn’t.
One woman, especially, made her opinion clear.
Victoria Whitmore was Daniel’s older sister.
She had never liked employees becoming close to the family.
At a private dinner, she looked at Emma.
“So you’re the nanny.”
Emma smiled.
“Yes.”
“Still?”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Victoria.”
She ignored him.
“You know how quickly people become attached to wealthy families.”
Emma understood the implication.
“Yes.”
Victoria smiled.
“Then you understand why we’re cautious.”
Emma looked at Daniel.
“I do.”
She didn’t argue.
She didn’t defend herself.
She simply continued dinner.
Later, Daniel apologized.
“You didn’t deserve that.”
Emma shrugged.
“I’m used to people judging me.”
“I’m not.”
“You should be.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because your world is different from mine.”
Daniel shook his head.
“My world changed when you entered it.”
Emma smiled.
But Victoria wasn’t finished.
She began investigating Emma.
She hired a private investigator.
She searched her family history.
Her finances.
Her employment records.
She wanted proof that Emma had manipulated Daniel.
Instead, she found something unexpected.
Emma had turned down several wealthy families who offered her higher salaries.
She had donated much of her savings to her brother’s medical treatment.
She had no criminal history.
No hidden debts.
No secret relationships.
Nothing.
Victoria finally confronted Daniel.
“I was wrong.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“That’s rare.”
“Don’t make me regret admitting it.”
He laughed.
She became serious.
“She’s good for you.”
“I know.”
“And Lily?”
“She loves her.”
Victoria nodded.
“Then don’t ruin it.”
Daniel smiled.
“I don’t plan to.”
Months passed.
Daniel and Emma became closer.
Eventually, they moved back into the Manhattan penthouse.
But Emma insisted that Lily keep some of the habits they had developed in Queens.
Simple dinners.
Walking to the park.
Doing chores.
Cooking together.
She wanted Lily to understand that wealth wasn’t the foundation of their family.
Love was.
Daniel agreed.
One evening, he asked Emma:
“Do you ever regret coming back?”
She looked at him.
“No.”
“Even after what I did?”
“Sometimes.”
He winced.
“Fair.”
“But I don’t regret forgiving you.”
Daniel took her hand.
“Thank you.”
She smiled.
“Don’t make me regret it.”
“I won’t.”
Then Lily ran into the room.
“Mom!”
The word slipped out accidentally.
Everyone froze.
Lily’s eyes widened.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma immediately knelt.
“You don’t have to apologize.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
Lily looked at Emma.
“Can I call you that?”
Emma couldn’t speak.
She looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
“If you want to.”
Lily smiled.
“Mom.”
Emma hugged her.
And for the first time, the title didn’t feel borrowed.
It felt earned.
