Billionaire Dad Pretended to Be Broke to Test His Daughter’s Nanny—She Had No Idea

Chapter 6

Emma confronted him over breakfast.

“Who are you?”

Daniel nearly dropped his coffee.

“What?”

She looked directly at him.

“Who are you really?”

He said nothing.

Emma folded her arms.

“You know things ordinary people don’t.”

“Like what?”

“Yesterday, you knew exactly which specialist to ask for.”

“I researched.”

“You didn’t.”

Daniel looked away.

“You knew how the hospital system worked.”

“I’ve dealt with hospitals before.”

“You have no problem negotiating bills.”

“Anyone can.”

“You wear cheap clothes, but you carry yourself like a man who has never been cheap.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“That’s an odd thing to say.”

“I’m observant.”

“I’ve noticed.”

Emma’s voice softened.

“I don’t care if you’re rich.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why are you asking?”

“Because you lied.”

He lowered his head.

“You’re right.”

Emma waited.

“My name is Daniel Whitmore.”

Silence.

Emma blinked.

“The Daniel Whitmore?”

He nodded.

“The company?”

“Yes.”

“The buildings?”

“Yes.”

“The billionaire?”

Daniel grimaced.

“Unfortunately.”

Emma stared at him.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because she couldn’t believe it.

“You pretended to be broke.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to test you.”

Her expression hardened.

“Test me?”

“Yes.”

“Like an experiment?”

“No.”

“That’s exactly what it was.”

Daniel stood.

“I needed to know whether you cared about Lily.”

“I told you I did.”

“I know.”

“No, you didn’t.”

He lowered his voice.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma shook her head.

“You let me give you my savings.”

“I didn’t expect that.”

“But you accepted it.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You’re right.”

“You watched me panic.”

“I know.”

“You watched Lily cry.”

“I know.”

“You lied about losing custody.”

“I know.”

Emma stepped back.

“I trusted you.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I was.”

She walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To Lily.”

“Please.”

Emma stopped.

“Don’t make her part of this.”

“I won’t.”

She turned.

“Then what do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“You wanted proof.”

“I have it.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because you deserved the truth.”

Emma looked at him.

“And now?”

“Now you can leave.”

She stared.

Daniel continued.

“I’ll pay you everything you should have earned.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“I know.”

“You really don’t understand.”

“What?”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t stay because of Lily’s family name.”

“I know.”

“I stayed because she needed me.”

“I know.”

“And I didn’t give you my savings because I thought you’d reward me.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you test me?”

Daniel had no answer.

Finally, he said:

“Because everyone I’ve ever trusted wanted something.”

Emma looked at him.

“And you assumed I did too.”

“Yes.”

She nodded slowly.

“That’s your problem.”

Then she walked upstairs.

Daniel remained in the kitchen.

For the first time in his life, money couldn’t fix what he had broken.

He could buy another house.

Another company.

Another car.

But he couldn’t buy trust.

And he had just spent thirty days destroying it.

That afternoon, Emma packed her things.

Lily watched her.

“Are you leaving?”

Emma knelt.

“I need some time.”

“Because Daddy is rich?”

Emma smiled sadly.

“No.”

“Because he lied?”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Lily hugged her.

“Please don’t go.”

Emma held her tightly.

“I’ll always love you.”

Daniel stood in the doorway.

He wanted to stop her.

But he knew he had no right.

Emma left.

The apartment became unbearably quiet.

Daniel looked at the empty bedroom.

And realized that his test had succeeded.

He had discovered the truth.

Emma had never cared about his money.

But he had also discovered something far more painful.

He had cared about her.

More than he was willing to admit.
