Billionaire Dad Pretended to Be Broke to Test His Daughter’s Nanny—She Had No Idea

Chapter 10

A year later, Daniel proposed.

He didn’t do it at a gala.

He didn’t rent a stadium.

He didn’t buy a diamond the size of a marble.

He simply took Emma back to the tiny apartment in Queens where the deception had begun.

The building had changed owners.

The apartment was empty.

They stood in the kitchen.

“This is where I lied to you,” Daniel said.

Emma smiled.

“I remember.”

“This is where you gave me your savings.”

“I remember that too.”

“This is where I realized I loved you.”

Emma looked at him.

“You didn’t tell me.”

“I was terrified.”

“You were always terrified.”

“Yes.”

He reached into his pocket.

Then he knelt.

Emma covered her mouth.

“Daniel.”

“I know I don’t deserve another chance.”

“You have one.”

“I know.”

He opened the box.

The ring was simple.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Emma started crying.

“Will you marry me?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

He stood.

She kissed him.

Then they heard applause.

They turned.

Lily stood in the doorway.

Behind her was Marcus.

And several friends.

Emma laughed.

“You knew?”

Lily grinned.

“Of course.”

Daniel looked betrayed.

“Everyone knew except me.”

Marcus laughed.

“You were the last one.”

That evening became a celebration.

But something unexpected happened.

Victoria arrived with a gift.

She handed Emma a small box.

“What’s this?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a necklace.

Rebecca’s necklace.

Emma stared.

“I can’t accept this.”

Victoria shook her head.

“My brother kept it for years.”

She looked at Daniel.

“He told me he wanted to give it to the woman who became Lily’s mother.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

She looked at Daniel.

“Are you sure?”

He nodded.

“Completely.”

Emma hugged Victoria.

It was the beginning of a new relationship.

Months later, the wedding was held at a small estate outside Boston.

No business executives were invited unless they were genuine friends.

No press.

No photographers from magazines.

Just family.

Friends.

And Lily.

She walked down the aisle carrying flowers.

When Emma reached the altar, Lily took her hand.

“You look pretty.”

Emma whispered:

“So do you.”

Daniel smiled.

“I think you’re both trying to make me cry.”

Lily laughed.

“You already are.”

Everyone laughed.

The ceremony was simple.

Daniel made one promise.

“I spent too many years believing protection meant controlling everything.”

He looked at Emma.

“You taught me that real protection is trust.”

Emma held his hands.

“You taught me that people can change.”

Then she looked at Lily.

“And you taught me that family can be chosen.”

They kissed.

Lily cheered.

For Daniel, the wedding wasn’t the end of the story.

It was the moment he finally understood the lesson his own test had failed to teach him.

You cannot measure someone’s heart by removing money.

You measure it by what they do when there is nothing to gain.

Emma had stayed when Daniel pretended to be broke.

She had given away her savings.

She had fought for Lily.

And when she discovered the truth, she didn’t ask for money.

She asked for honesty.

That was worth more than everything Daniel owned.
