Billionaire CEO Tested a Delivery Girl—What He Found Changed Everything
Chapter 8
Alexander couldn’t sleep.
His father had always been his hero.
The man who taught him how to run a company.
The man whose death had pushed him into the CEO position.
Now there was evidence that his father had known about the fraud.
Maybe even participated.
Emily found him sitting alone in the office.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She sat beside him.
“What did you find?”
He showed her the photograph.
Emily studied it.
“Maybe he was investigating.”
“Maybe.”
“You don’t know yet.”
Alexander nodded.
The next morning, they searched his father’s private archives.
They found dozens of documents.
Most were ordinary.
Then Emily discovered a hidden compartment.
Inside was a handwritten journal.
Alexander opened it.
His father’s first entry mentioned Margaret.
She knows.
The next:
Father wants me to stay quiet.
Then:
Richard is getting dangerous.
Alexander looked at Emily.
“My father wasn’t part of it.”
“He was trying to stop it.”
They continued reading.
His father had secretly helped Margaret gather evidence.
But he had been afraid of destroying the family.
Then, near the end, he wrote:
If anything happens to me, protect the reserve. Richard must never control it.
Alexander’s hands trembled.
His father’s death hadn’t been an accident.
It was connected.
Emily touched his shoulder.
“We’ll find out.”
Alexander looked at her.
“Why are you still here?”
She smiled.
“Because you need me.”
“I do.”
The words came naturally.
No hesitation.
Emily smiled.
“So do I.”
They spent the next several days following the journal.
It led them to an old bank in Indiana.
Margaret had stored a final piece of evidence there.
They drove overnight.
When they arrived, an elderly bank manager greeted them.
He looked at Alexander.
“Your grandfather told me you might come.”
Alexander froze.
“When?”
“Years ago.”
The manager handed him a small key.
“Safe deposit box 317.”
Inside was a single envelope.
The envelope contained a recording.
Alexander played it.
His grandfather’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re hearing this, Richard has likely discovered the reserve.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
“I couldn’t expose him without risking thousands of employees.”
His grandfather explained that the reserve had been hidden to protect the company.
Then he said something unexpected.
“I made a mistake.”
Alexander listened.
“I believed protecting the family meant protecting its secrets.”
The recording continued.
“Secrets only protect criminals.”
Emily looked at Alexander.
His grandfather had finally admitted the truth.
The recording named Richard.
It also identified several accomplices.
And then came the final sentence.
“The person who exposes them must be someone outside the family.”
Alexander looked at Emily.
She understood.
“That’s why my grandmother was involved.”
“Yes.”
“And why you chose me.”
Alexander nodded.
But there was another surprise.
The final document named Emily’s grandmother as trustee of the reserve.
Emily stared.
“My grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“Then…”
Alexander understood.
“If Richard takes the company, the reserve remains protected.”
“Because it’s legally connected to my grandmother’s trust.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
She wasn’t just connected to the mystery.
Her grandmother had been protecting hundreds of millions of dollars for decades.
And now the responsibility had passed to her.
The delivery girl was suddenly the legal heir to the secret fund.
But neither of them knew that Richard had discovered this too.
And he was coming for her.
