Their wedding took place beneath an old oak tree beside Lake Michigan.
Emily wore a simple ivory dress.
Alexander wore a dark suit.

“You came.”
She laughed.
“I almost didn’t.”
“Why?”
“Delivery was late.”

The ceremony was beautiful.

“When you first tested me, I thought you were arrogant.”
“I was.”

She smiled.

They exchanged rings.

The crowd applauded.

She laughed.
“You kept this?”
“Of course.”
“You are ridiculous.”
“I know.”
She turned it over.
On the back, Alexander had written:

Emily smiled.

Alexander shook his head.

“Exactly.”
She leaned against him.

He thought about it.
“No.”
“Really?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if I hadn’t, I might never have discovered you.”
Emily smiled.
“Then I suppose I forgive you.”
“Generous.”
They laughed.
