Billionaire CEO Tested a Delivery Girl—What He Found Changed Everything
Chapter 2
Alexander Harrington didn’t sleep that night.
He sat alone in his penthouse overlooking Chicago, staring at a spreadsheet projected onto the wall.
Twenty-three million dollars.
Gone.
The money had been siphoned from a construction subsidiary through a series of shell companies.
The transactions were sophisticated.
Too sophisticated for a random employee.
Someone high inside the organization was involved.
Alexander’s chief financial officer had denied everything.
His legal team had found nothing.
His security department had found no evidence.
And yet the money kept disappearing.
Alexander closed the laptop.
His grandfather had built Harrington Global from a small construction company into a multinational empire.
Alexander had inherited the company at thirty-one after his father’s sudden death.
He had spent seven years protecting it.
Now someone was trying to take it apart from the inside.
His assistant, Marcus, entered the room.
“We’ve narrowed the suspects to eight executives.”
Alexander shook his head.
“They’re all too obvious.”
“What do you mean?”
“If someone inside this company is smart enough to steal twenty-three million dollars, they’re smart enough to know we’d investigate the executives first.”
Marcus frowned.
“So what are you suggesting?”
Alexander remembered Emily.
A delivery girl with an engineering degree.
Someone who had no reason to be involved.
Someone who could walk through the building without attracting attention.
“Tomorrow,” Alexander said, “I want you to create a fake problem.”
Marcus stared.
“What kind?”
“Engineering.”
The next morning, Alexander arranged for a confidential blueprint to be left in a conference room.
It showed a fictional expansion project.
The numbers were deliberately wrong.
A competent engineer would notice immediately.
The document contained an impossible load calculation.
If the design were real, the building would eventually develop a structural failure.
Alexander wanted to see who noticed.
More importantly, he wanted to see who tried to hide it.
At noon, Emily arrived again.
She had another delivery.
This time, Alexander met her in the lobby.
“You again.”
She smiled.
“You ordered lunch.”
“I did.”
He handed her a sealed envelope.
“Could you take this upstairs?”
Emily looked at it.
“Where?”
“Conference room twenty-seven.”
“Sure.”
She turned.
Then stopped.
“Mr. Harrington?”
“Yes?”
“Is this construction project yours?”
Alexander’s heart skipped.
“Why?”
“The drawing on the back.”
He looked at the envelope.
There was no drawing.
Emily turned it over.
A tiny printed line was visible through the transparent edge.
She pointed.
“That’s a load distribution diagram.”
Alexander stared.
“You know what that is?”
“I told you. Mechanical engineering.”
“What do you think?”
Emily hesitated.
“The numbers are wrong.”
Alexander kept his face neutral.
“How?”
“The center of gravity is misplaced.”
She pulled a pen from her bag.
“Here.”
She marked the envelope.
“If this were a real structure, the stress would shift here.”
She drew another line.
“Whoever designed this would either need a stronger support or a completely different distribution.”
Alexander stared at the calculation.
She was right.
She had identified the problem in less than thirty seconds.
“How long would it take you to fix it?”
Emily shrugged.
“If I had the complete drawing? Maybe ten minutes.”
Alexander smiled.
“Interesting.”
Emily handed the envelope back.
“Is that all?”
“Yes.”
She walked away.
Alexander watched her disappear through the revolving doors.
Marcus approached.
“She noticed it.”
“I know.”
“Do you think she could be involved?”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why test her?”
Alexander looked toward the doors.
“Because I think she might be exactly what we’ve been looking for.”
Not a thief.
Not a spy.
Something much more valuable.
Someone who could see what everyone else overlooked.
