Ten years after that first delivery, Emily stood in the lobby of Harrington Tower.
The building had changed.
So had she.
She wore a tailored navy suit.
Her hair was pulled back.
An engineering award hung around her neck.
A group of young interns passed by.
One of them whispered:
“That’s Emily Carter.”
Another asked:
“Who is she?”
Emily smiled.
She had heard that question before.
She walked toward the elevators.
The security guard at the desk was older now.
He smiled when he saw her.
“Still delivering?”
Emily laughed.
“Never.”
The elevator doors opened.
She stepped inside.
Forty-two.
When she reached the executive floor, Alexander was waiting.
He looked almost exactly as he had ten years earlier.
Except for the gray beginning at his temples.
“You took your time.”
Emily raised an eyebrow.
“Traffic.”
“Excuse.”
He held out his hand.
She took it.
They walked into the conference room where everything had started.
On the table was the original blueprint.
The one with the impossible calculation.
Emily picked it up.
“You still have this?”
“Of course.”
She smiled.
“You know what I see now?”
“What?”
“Your mistake.”
Alexander laughed.
“I knew you’d say that.”
She pointed to the calculation.
“You could have solved it yourself.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you ask me?”
He looked at her.
“Because I wanted to know who you were.”
“And?”
He smiled.
“I found more than I expected.”
Emily placed the blueprint down.
“Me too.”
Their daughter, Sophie, entered the room.
She was seventeen.
She carried a stack of engineering books.
“Mom, Dad, are you coming?”
Emily looked at her.
“Where?”
“Grandma’s foundation dinner.”
Alexander smiled.
“Right.”
Sophie looked at the old blueprint.
“What’s that?”
Emily laughed.
“That’s how your father tested me.”
Sophie stared at Alexander.
“You tested Mom?”
“I did.”
“Why?”
“I was an idiot.”
Sophie nodded.
“That sounds accurate.”
Emily burst out laughing.
Alexander shook his head.
“Whose side are you on?”
“Mom’s.”
“Of course.”
They walked out together.
Emily looked back once.
At the conference room.
At the blueprint.
At the place where a delivery had changed her life.
She had once believed she was invisible.
She had believed her degree was wasted.
She had believed her future was gone.
