Homeless Boy Shouts ‘Don’t Eat That!’ Billionaire Freezes When He Finds Out Why

Chapter 1

The first thing Daniel Mercer noticed was the boy’s shoes.

They were far too small.

One shoe had a hole near the toe, and the other was held together with a strip of gray duct tape. The boy stood barefoot on the cold pavement with his shoulders hunched against the December wind, watching people walk past him outside the luxury restaurant.

Daniel almost looked away.

He had become very good at looking away.

At forty-two, Daniel Mercer was worth nearly eight billion dollars. He owned hotels, apartment buildings, technology companies, and a private investment firm. His face appeared regularly in financial magazines. People called him brilliant, ruthless, disciplined.

They rarely called him lonely.

That night, he was having dinner at the most expensive restaurant in downtown Chicago with three members of his board.

The restaurant’s glass walls overlooked Michigan Avenue, where snow drifted beneath the streetlights.

Daniel sat at the center of a private table.

Across from him sat his chief financial officer, Martin Hale.

“Tomorrow’s acquisition vote is the only thing that matters,” Martin said.

Daniel barely listened.

His attention had shifted toward the window.

The boy was still outside.

He couldn’t have been older than ten.

A dirty backpack hung from one shoulder.

Daniel looked away.

“Mr. Mercer?”

Daniel blinked.

Martin repeated himself.

“Are you comfortable approving the revised purchase agreement?”

“Yes.”

The waiter arrived with the main course.

Daniel’s steak was placed in front of him.

A glass of expensive red wine followed.

The board members continued discussing the acquisition.

Daniel picked up his fork.

Then—

DON’T EAT THAT!

The entire restaurant went silent.

Daniel froze.

The boy had pressed both hands against the restaurant window.

His face was terrified.

He shouted again.

“Don’t eat it!”

Security immediately moved toward him.

The boy pointed directly at Daniel’s plate.

“Please!”

Daniel stared at the steak.

Then at the boy.

The security guard grabbed the boy’s arm.

“Hey! You can’t be here.”

“No!” the boy shouted. “Please let me tell him!”

Daniel stood.

“Stop.”

The guard froze.

Daniel walked toward the window.

The boy stared at him through the glass.

“What is your name?”

The boy hesitated.

“Sam.”

“Sam what?”

“Sam Carter.”

“Why shouldn’t I eat my dinner?”

Sam looked around nervously.

“Because they’re trying to kill you.”

Several people gasped.

Martin stood immediately.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous.”

But Daniel kept looking at the boy.

“How do you know?”

Sam swallowed.

“Because I saw what they put on it.”

The waiter went pale.

Daniel slowly turned toward his plate.

Something about the boy’s expression made his stomach tighten.

It wasn’t the look of a child trying to cause trouble.

It was fear.

Real fear.

Daniel looked at the waiter.

“Take the plate away.”

Martin frowned.

“Daniel—”

“Now.”

The waiter removed the plate.

Daniel looked back at Sam.

“Come inside.”

The security guard stared.

“Sir?”

“You heard me.”

Sam stepped inside cautiously.

Everyone watched him.

His clothes were filthy.

His hair was tangled.

He looked like he hadn’t eaten properly in weeks.

Daniel crouched so they were at eye level.

“Tell me exactly what you saw.”

Sam glanced toward Martin.

Then the waiter.

Then the kitchen.

Finally, he whispered:

“The man who made your food touched something inside the kitchen.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What?”

Sam pointed toward the kitchen door.

“Then he washed his hands.”

Daniel stood.

“Nobody leaves.”

The restaurant doors were locked.

The police were called.

And within twenty minutes, the evening that had begun as an ordinary business dinner had become something far darker.

Because the steak wasn’t simply contaminated.

It contained traces of a rare toxin.

And the only person who had noticed was a homeless ten-year-old boy standing outside in the snow.

Daniel didn’t know why Sam had been watching him.

He didn’t know how the boy recognized the danger.

And he certainly didn’t know that the answer would lead back to a tragedy Daniel had spent ten years trying to forget.
