“A Don Doesn’t Date Fat Girls,” She Spat. He Locked The Door “Watch Me Make You My Wife”
Chapter 2
Bianca did not take his hand.
She took three steps backward instead.
“No.”
Matteo’s eyebrows lifted.
“No?”
“No.”
He stared at her.
Most people didn’t say no to him.
Bianca didn’t seem impressed by that fact.
“You can’t just decide I’m coming with you.”
“I can ask.”
“You didn’t.”
A small silence passed between them.
Then Matteo nodded.
“You’re right.”
Bianca wasn’t expecting that.
He looked at her differently now.
Not as someone difficult.
As someone worth negotiating with.
“My security team just intercepted a threat against you,” he said.
Her expression changed.
“Against me?”
“They used your full name.”
Bianca’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Then why are you telling me?”
“Because you were seen speaking to me.”
“That happens at charity events.”
“This wasn’t a random threat.”
He took out his phone and showed her a photograph.
A black sedan.
Parked outside the hotel.
Bianca recognized it.
She had seen it outside her apartment twice that week.
Her breath caught.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I was investigating.”
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then a security officer approached.
“Boss.”
Matteo turned.
“Sir, we have movement near the east entrance.”
His expression hardened.
“Move everyone to the private corridor.”
The officer nodded.
Matteo looked at Bianca.
“You have two choices.”
She waited.
“You can leave with your own security.”
“Or?”
“You can come to my residence until we know who sent the threat.”
Bianca crossed her arms.
“And that’s supposed to make me feel safe?”
“No.”
“What, then?”
“Accurate.”
She almost laughed.
“You really don’t know how to charm people.”
“I wasn’t trying to.”
Then the ballroom lights flickered.
A glass shattered near the entrance.
Security rushed forward.
Matteo immediately stepped between Bianca and the room.
Everything happened in seconds.
Someone shouted.
Guests screamed.
The security team moved.
A side door opened.
Matteo took Bianca by the arm.
“Stay close.”
“I can walk.”
“Then walk fast.”
They moved through the private corridor.
Behind them, guards locked the ballroom doors.
Bianca’s heart hammered.
“Was that a gunshot?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because a gunshot would have scared me.”
She looked at him.
He looked completely calm.
That frightened her more.
They reached a private elevator.
Matteo pressed the button.
The doors opened.
Inside, Bianca caught her reflection in the mirrored wall.
Her hair was messy.
Her mascara had smudged.
She looked nothing like the polished woman from thirty minutes earlier.
Matteo stood beside her.
Perfect.
Untouched.
She suddenly felt self-conscious.
He noticed.
“You’re staring at the mirror.”
“So?”
“You’re checking whether you still look acceptable.”
Bianca’s face tightened.
“Don’t analyze me.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
He met her eyes in the reflection.
“I was checking whether you’re hurt.”
She looked away.
The elevator opened into a private underground garage.
A black armored SUV waited.
Bianca stopped.
“I don’t think so.”
Matteo looked at her.
“You don’t trust me.”
“No.”
“Smart.”
That answer surprised her again.
He opened the rear door.
“You don’t have to trust me tonight.”
She hesitated.
“But?”
“But you do need to survive tonight.”
Bianca got inside.
The door closed.
Ten minutes later, they arrived at Matteo’s private residence.
The building looked less like a home and more like a fortress.
When Bianca stepped inside, Matteo locked the main security doors.
She turned.
“You locked the door.”
“Yes.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“That’s not comforting.”
“It isn’t meant to be.”
Matteo looked at her.
“It’s meant to keep someone else out.”
Bianca didn’t answer.
Then he said something that would stay in her mind for a very long time.
“Tonight, you’re protected.”
