She Saved a Freezing Stranger in Her Bakery—Not Knowing He Owned Half the City

Chapter 1

Why was a man who looked like he had nowhere left to go standing barefoot in the snow outside her bakery at five in the morning?

Mara Bennett noticed him through the steamed-up front window while she was carrying a tray of cinnamon rolls from the kitchen.

The bakery had not opened yet.

The street outside was almost empty, buried beneath a hard layer of overnight snow. Streetlights cast pale circles onto the sidewalk, and the wind pushed loose snow against the doors of the closed shops.

The stranger stood beneath the narrow awning beside Mara’s bakery.

His dark coat was soaked through.

One hand pressed against the brick wall.

His other arm was wrapped around his ribs.

He wasn’t knocking.

He was simply trying to remain standing.

Mara put the tray down.

“Who are you?”

The man lifted his head.

His face was pale, his lips nearly blue.

“I don’t need anything.”

He took one step.

Then his knees buckled.

Mara ran.

She unlocked the door, pulled it open, and caught him before his head struck the pavement.

He was heavier than she expected.

“Hey! Hey, stay awake.”

The stranger’s eyes fluttered.

“I said…” His voice was barely audible. “I don’t need help.”

“That’s unfortunate,” Mara muttered. “Because you’re getting it.”

She dragged him inside.

Warm air rolled over them, carrying the smell of butter, yeast, sugar, and freshly brewed coffee.

The stranger shivered violently.

Mara locked the door behind them.

She had no idea who he was.

She only knew that if she left him outside, he might not survive the morning.

And three hours later, when two black SUVs stopped outside her bakery and six men in expensive coats entered looking for him, Mara still didn’t know that the freezing stranger she had saved was the man who owned half the buildings on the street.

His name was Adrian Cole.

And someone had tried to make sure he never reached home.
