Friday morning began like any other.
Daniel arrived early.
He cleaned the executive floor before most employees came in.
At eight fifteen, the company’s CEO, Victoria Sterling, entered the building.
Victoria was thirty-nine.
Brilliant.
Fearless.
And notorious for never wasting a second.
Her leadership had transformed Sterling Technologies from a regional software company into a global enterprise.
People admired her.
Some feared her.
Almost nobody knew her personally.
Victoria usually arrived through the private entrance.
That morning, however, her usual driver was sick.
She was forced to use the front entrance.
She walked through the lobby carrying coffee and a folder.
Then she saw Lily sitting on a bench.
The little girl was coloring.
Victoria stopped.
“Whose child is that?”
A receptionist looked nervous.
“Daniel Carter’s daughter.”
“She comes here?”
“Sometimes.”
Victoria watched Lily carefully.
The girl looked harmless.
Cute.
Quiet.
But something about the situation bothered her.
“Where is Daniel?”
“He’s on eleven.”
Victoria continued toward the elevator.
At ten thirty, Daniel came downstairs.
Lily ran toward him.
“Dad!”
He smiled.
“Ready to go?”
She nodded.
“I finished my picture.”
He kissed her forehead.
“Good.”
They walked toward the employee exit.
Victoria happened to be standing nearby.
She watched the janitor and his daughter leave.
For a moment, something about the little girl’s face felt strangely familiar.
Then Victoria shook the thought away.
She had bigger problems.
A major acquisition was being finalized.
A new investor was arriving.
And her security team had warned her that someone had been leaking confidential information.
She didn’t know that the leak was connected to something happening in the parking garage.
And she didn’t know that Daniel was about to become the only employee who would notice.
