At five twenty, Daniel finished his shift.
Lily was waiting near the underground parking entrance.
She had her backpack on.
Daniel unlocked his old sedan.
“Ready?”
“Can we get pizza?”
“Tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“We’re going to Grandma’s.”
She groaned.
“Grandma always makes vegetables.”
Daniel laughed.
“That’s because Grandma believes vegetables solve everything.”
He opened the passenger door.
Then he saw a black SUV parked three spaces away.
A woman in a gray coat stood beside it.
Victoria’s personal assistant, Rebecca.
Daniel recognized her.
She had ordered him to clean the executive conference room several times.
He didn’t think much of it.
Until Lily whispered:
“Dad.”
He looked down.
“What?”
“That woman was looking at me.”
Daniel turned.
Rebecca quickly looked away.
Then another man stepped out of the SUV.
Daniel didn’t know him.
He was wearing a security badge.
But something about the badge looked wrong.
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Stay here.”
He walked toward them.
“Can I help you?”
The man smiled.
“We’re here for Miss Sterling.”
Daniel frowned.
“Victoria?”
“Yes.”
“She’s already gone.”
The man looked toward Lily.
“Actually, we’re here for her daughter.”
Daniel froze.
Victoria didn’t have a daughter.
Everyone knew that.
He took one step toward Lily.
The man’s expression changed.
Daniel suddenly understood.
This wasn’t security.
Someone was trying to get the little girl.
He spun around.
“Lily!”
The man moved.
Daniel shouted:
“Don’t get in the car!”
Lily froze.
The parking garage erupted into movement.
The stranger reached for her.
Daniel shoved him backward.
Rebecca screamed.
A security guard came running.
The SUV’s engine roared.
Then tires screeched.
The vehicle sped toward the exit.
Daniel pulled Lily behind him.
Her face was white.
“Dad?”
“I’m here.”
But the stranger had disappeared.
And Daniel knew something much worse.
Someone had intentionally mistaken Lily for Victoria’s daughter.
Which meant the attempted kidnapping had not been random.
Someone inside Sterling Technologies had made a terrible mistake.
