Ten years after the night Daniel pulled Lily away from a black SUV, he stood outside Sterling Technologies with her on the day she received her university acceptance.
She was sixteen.
Tall.
Confident.
Smart.
Just like her mother.
Daniel looked at the letter.
“Medical school.”
Lily nodded.
“I want to study pediatric medicine.”
Victoria stepped outside.
“I’m proud of you.”
Lily hugged her.
“You helped.”
Victoria smiled.
“So did your dad.”
Lily looked at both of them.
“Can I tell you something?”
“What?”
“I think Mom would be happy.”
Silence filled the courtyard.
Daniel looked toward the sky.
“Yeah.”
Victoria nodded.
“I think she would.”
Lily held the old drawing.
The one she had made years ago.
The figures had faded.
But the yellow sun was still bright.
Daniel looked at it.
“Remember when you drew this?”
“Yes.”
“You barely knew Victoria.”
Lily smiled.
“But I knew she needed family.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“Kids always notice things adults miss.”
Daniel took Lily’s hand.
The three of them walked toward the building.
The same company where Daniel had once been invisible.
The same hallways he had once cleaned at night.
Now his name was on the employee support center.
A place built for people who worked hard while raising families.
Victoria had changed too.
She no longer measured success only in billions.
She measured it in people who went home to their children because the company gave them the flexibility to do so.
And Daniel?
He was still a father.
