Lily spent the evening drawing at Victoria’s kitchen table.
Daniel stayed nearby.
He was uncomfortable in a house where everything cost more than he made in months.
Victoria sat across from him.
“How long have you worked for Sterling?”
“Three years.”
“And before that?”
“I worked in finance.”
She looked surprised.
“Why did you leave?”
Daniel hesitated.
“My wife died.”
Victoria became quiet.
“I’m sorry.”
“Lily was two.”
“How did you manage?”
“Not easily.”
Victoria studied him.
“You could have gone back to finance.”
“I could have.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Daniel looked toward Lily.
“I wanted to be there.”
Victoria nodded slowly.
“My father always said family was a distraction.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You believed him?”
“I did for a long time.”
She stood.
“Now I know he was wrong.”
That surprised him.
Victoria rarely admitted anyone was wrong.
Especially herself.
A moment later, Lily walked over carrying her drawing.
She handed it to Victoria.
“That’s you.”
Victoria looked at the picture.
A woman stood beside Lily and Daniel.
“Who am I?”
“The boss.”
Victoria laughed.
“That’s accurate.”
Lily pointed to another figure.
“And that’s you.”
Daniel smiled.
“Apparently I’m still holding the mop.”
Victoria looked at the drawing.
For some reason, she didn’t want to give it back.
She had no children.
No siblings.
No family members who visited.
Her entire life revolved around work.
Lily looked at her.
“Do you live here alone?”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
“That’s sad.”
Daniel nearly laughed.
Victoria smiled.
“Maybe it is.”
That night, Victoria couldn’t sleep.
She kept thinking about the little girl.
And about the strange feeling she had experienced the moment she saw Daniel protect her.
It felt familiar.
As if she had seen that exact expression somewhere before.
