Single Dad Applied as a Janitor — Then the Billionaire CEO Recognized His Name
Chapter 7
Daniel stared at Mark.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know.”
“You have my fingerprint records?”
“From the trust documents.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I’ve never been near that account.”
Mark looked at Evelyn.
“Someone duplicated his biometric authorization.”
Evelyn stood.
“Can that be done?”
“Not easily.”
“Then who could do it?”
Mark hesitated.
“Someone with access to the original files.”
Daniel thought of Victor.
“We know who.”
They contacted the bank.
The transfer was already underway.
Twenty million dollars had been moved.
To an account controlled by Victor Shaw.
Mark immediately froze the remaining assets.
But the damage was done.
Daniel’s name was now attached to a suspicious transaction.
The next morning, investigators arrived at Sterling Global.
Daniel was called into a conference room.
A federal agent sat across from him.
“Mr. Brooks, we have questions.”
Evelyn tried to enter.
The agent stopped her.
“You cannot interfere.”
Daniel looked at her.
She nodded.
“I’ll be here.”
He sat down.
The agent placed the transaction records on the table.
“Do you know this account?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize this transfer?”
“No.”
“Do you understand that the funds originated from a company connected to your late father?”
“No.”
The agent studied him.
“Then why is your fingerprint attached?”
“I don’t know.”
The questioning lasted two hours.
Daniel was released.
For now.
Outside, Evelyn waited.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded.
“Are they charging me?”
“Not yet.”
“You think they will?”
“No.”
“You sound confident.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
“Because I know you’re innocent.”
He looked at her.
She meant it.
Daniel smiled.
“Thank you.”
Then a woman approached.
She looked to be in her sixties.
“Daniel?”
He turned.
“Yes?”
She introduced herself.
“Anna Miller.”
“Who are you?”
“I worked for your father.”
Daniel frowned.
“Where?”
“At the warehouse.”
She handed him an envelope.
“Thomas told me to give you this if Victor ever tried to frame you.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a small memory card.
“What’s on it?”
“Your father’s last meeting.”
Daniel’s heart raced.
“With Victor?”
Anna nodded.
“And someone else.”
“Who?”
She looked at Evelyn.
“Your father.”
Daniel froze.
Robert Sterling.
“He’s dead.”
Anna’s expression was grim.
“The man in the recording isn’t talking about money.”
“Then what?”
“Your father discovered Victor planned to take the company.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“What did my father do?”
“He tried to stop him.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because Victor threatened Daniel.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Anna nodded.
“Victor said he’d kill Thomas’s son if Robert exposed him.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“My father knew.”
Daniel watched her.
They had both spent years believing their fathers had failed them.
Now they were learning that both men had been fighting to protect them.
Anna continued.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
“Thomas hid the original ownership records.”
“Where?”
“In the one place Victor would never search.”
Daniel looked confused.
“The building where you applied for the janitor’s job.”
Silence.
Sterling Global.
The headquarters.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Your father hid my inheritance here.”
She nodded.
“Then we find it.”
That evening, Daniel started working as an unofficial investigator inside the company.
The janitor application had given him access to service corridors.
He remembered every old floor plan.
Every storage room.
Every locked door.
At midnight, he found an abandoned maintenance closet behind the executive offices.
The wall sounded hollow.
He knocked.
Nothing.
He moved a cabinet.
Behind it was a hidden metal door.
A keypad.
He tried his birth date.
The lock opened.
Inside was a box.
His father’s handwriting was on the lid.
For Daniel.
