Single Dad Applied as a Janitor — Then the Billionaire CEO Recognized His Name
Chapter 6
The revelation changed Daniel’s understanding of his entire childhood.
His father had not been a struggling accountant.
He had owned a private logistics company.
A small one at first.
Then it had grown.
Contracts.
Warehouses.
Shipping rights.
Investments.
By the time Thomas died, the company was worth millions.
Victor had acquired control through forged documents.
Then he erased Daniel from the ownership records.
Daniel’s mother had received a tiny settlement.
They believed the company had collapsed.
It hadn’t.
It had been absorbed into Sterling Global.
Evelyn sat beside Daniel in the warehouse.
“My father didn’t know.”
“You believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he trusted Thomas.”
Daniel showed her the old files.
“Then how did Victor get control?”
She looked at the documents.
“We need a lawyer.”
“I have one.”
“Who?”
“Mark Ellis.”
“Can he help?”
“Yes.”
They returned to headquarters.
Mark arrived late that night.
He was a former federal prosecutor who now worked privately.
He examined the documents.
Then said,
“These are enough to reopen your father’s estate.”
Daniel stared.
“Can I get the company back?”
“Maybe.”
“How?”
“If the signatures are forged.”
“Then we prove they were.”
Mark nodded.
“But there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Somebody has been moving assets in Daniel’s name.”
“Still?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Mark showed them.
One account.
A trust.
Offshore.
Daniel’s name.
The current balance was $47 million.
He looked at Evelyn.
“I never knew.”
She shook her head.
“Neither did I.”
Mark frowned.
“This isn’t an inheritance account.”
“What is it?”
“A reserve.”
“For what?”
“Protection.”
Daniel felt a strange chill.
“For me?”
“Possibly.”
Then Mark looked at Evelyn.
“There’s one complication.”
“What?”
“If Victor created this account, he may be trying to lure Daniel into claiming it.”
“Why?”
“Because once Daniel legally touches the money, Victor could use it as evidence against him.”
Daniel understood.
“They want me to look like a thief.”
“Exactly.”
Evelyn stood.
“We won’t touch it.”
Daniel nodded.
“But I want to know why the account exists.”
Mark pulled out a final document.
“Then read this.”
It was a letter from Thomas.
My son,
I know you will grow up believing I left you nothing.
I am sorry.
What I leave you cannot be given to you safely until you understand who is protecting you.
Daniel’s hands shook.
Trust Robert Sterling.
Trust his daughter.
Do not trust anyone who tells you I betrayed you.
The letter was dated one day before Thomas died.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“My father trusted you before he even met you.”
She gave a sad smile.
“I was nineteen.”
“He knew you’d become CEO.”
“No.”
She looked at the letter.
“He believed I would become better than my father.”
Daniel smiled.
“Maybe he was right.”
Evelyn looked at him.
For a moment, the room became quiet.
Their relationship was changing.
Not quickly.
But deeply.
She wasn’t looking at him like an employee.
He wasn’t looking at her like a billionaire CEO.
They were two people carrying old family wounds.
Then Mark’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
A long pause.
“You’re sure?”
He hung up.
“What happened?” Evelyn asked.
“Someone just accessed the $47 million account.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“Who?”
Mark looked at him.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“The access was made using your fingerprint.”
