“What?”
“Can Sophia come to dinner?”

“You invited me?”
Lily nodded.
“You should come every day.”
Daniel laughed.
“That’s a big commitment.”
Lily shrugged.
“I like her.”
Evelyn crouched.
“I like you too.”
Lily looked at Daniel.
“Does that mean she stays?”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
She smiled.
“Maybe.”
Lily nodded.
“Good.”
That evening, Daniel cooked.
He was terrible.

Lily announced that neither adult should be allowed in the kitchen again.
They ordered pizza.
After dinner, Daniel and Evelyn sat on the porch.
“You know,” Evelyn said, “this is the first normal evening I’ve had in years.”
Daniel smiled.
“Normal is underrated.”
She looked at him.
“I was afraid of you at first.”
He laughed.
“Why?”
“Because you had my father’s trust.”
“And?”
“And I thought maybe that meant you would become like him.”
Daniel frowned.
“My father?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Your father.”
Daniel understood.
“My father?”
“He was powerful.”
“So was yours.”
“Exactly.”
She leaned closer.
“But you became something else.”
“What?”
“A man who doesn’t need power to know his worth.”
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s because I lost everything.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You found yourself.”

“I love you.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I need you to hear it.”
She kissed him.
