Daniel immediately demanded answers.
“Why are you here?”

Samuel placed a folder on the table.
“Your stepfather knew the truth.”
“What truth?”
“He was working with your father.”
Daniel stared.
“My stepfather?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he was protecting you.”
The story became even stranger.
Daniel’s stepfather had been assigned to watch over him after Thomas died.
He had married Daniel’s mother under circumstances nobody understood.
He had raised Daniel quietly.
And he had spent thirteen years making sure Victor couldn’t find the original ownership records.
“He lied to me my whole life.”
Samuel shook his head.
“He saved your life.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
She understood.
“Who was the man in the photograph?”
“Victor’s partner.”
“Who?”
Samuel opened the folder.

Jonathan Sterling.
Evelyn stared.
“My uncle.”
“The man who supposedly died ten years ago.”
Samuel nodded.
“He didn’t.”
Daniel looked at the document.
“What does he want?”
“Control.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
Samuel explained.
Jonathan Sterling had created Northstar Holdings.
He and Victor worked together.
Victor handled the company.
Jonathan handled the money.
They intended to take control of Sterling Global and Brooks Logistics.
Thomas discovered them.
Robert helped.
Daniel’s stepfather protected Daniel.
Everyone else died or disappeared.
Daniel looked sick.
“So my entire childhood was a lie.”
Samuel sighed.
“It was a shield.”

“No.”
Samuel handed him a small key.
“This opens the last file.”
“Where?”

“Where?”
Samuel looked at Evelyn.
“Your father’s personal vault.”
Evelyn’s eyes widened.

“You will.”
Samuel smiled.
“The vault recognizes both Sterling and Brooks authorization.”
Daniel understood.

The executive vault was hidden beneath the forty-second floor.
Daniel and Evelyn inserted their fingerprints.
The door opened.
Inside was a single table.
Two chairs.
A video recorder.
Evelyn pressed play.

“If you’re watching this, Jonathan and Victor have both failed to destroy the truth.”
Evelyn started crying.
Her father continued.
“Daniel, I owe your family a debt I cannot repay.”

Robert paused.

The recording continued.

“They were brothers in everything except blood.”

“Sterling.”
“And Brooks.”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
The company had been designed to pass jointly to them.
But Victor had stolen control.
Robert’s final words were simple.

The screen went black.
