She Walked Past the Mafia Boss Without Looking Back, and His Next Order Shocked Everyone

Chapter 7

Elena’s world seemed to stop.

She read the letter twice.

Then again.

Her father had died after falling from a warehouse roof.

Everyone had called it an accident.

But the letter claimed otherwise.

Matteo stood beside her.

“Who wrote it?”

“I don’t know.”

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the seal was not.

It belonged to Matteo’s father.

Elena looked at him.

“Your family knew.”

Matteo nodded slowly.

“My father suspected something.”

“And your mother?”

“I don’t know.”

They searched the old family records.

The Belladonna archives were hidden beneath the trading house.

There they found correspondence from twenty years earlier.

Matteo’s father had written to Marco Moretti.

If anything happens to me, protect my son.

Another letter followed.

The man closest to us has already sold the river.

Marco had replied.

I know.

Then nothing.

Elena’s hands trembled.

“My father knew Caruso.”

Matteo nodded.

“He knew all of them.”

They continued searching.

Near midnight, Elena found a map.

It showed an abandoned chapel outside town.

A note was written across the back.

Where the bell no longer rings.

They went there before dawn.

Inside the ruined chapel, Elena found a loose stone.

Behind it was another box.

Inside was a collection of letters.

The first was from Marco.

Elena, if you ever find this, forgive me for leaving you with questions.

The second revealed the truth.

Marco had discovered that Caruso was not acting alone.

A wealthy merchant named Lorenzo Valli had financed the operation.

But Valli was dead.

Or so everyone believed.

The final letter contained a name.

A name Elena knew.

Her uncle.

Thomas Moretti.

She stared at the page.

“My uncle?”

Matteo looked at her.

“He’s alive?”

“He lives three streets from my house.”

Matteo’s expression hardened.

“Then we go now.”
