She Walked Past the Mafia Boss Without Looking Back, and His Next Order Shocked Everyone
Chapter 6
The doors shut.
Six guards remained in the hall.
Caruso looked around.
“What is this?”
Matteo walked toward him.
“An accounting.”
Caruso frowned.
Matteo placed three documents on the table.
“Your signature.”
Caruso glanced at them.
“Forgery.”
“Your handwriting.”
“Coincidence.”
“Your payments.”
“Fabrication.”
Matteo nodded.
Then Elena placed the ledger beside them.
Caruso stopped breathing for half a second.
That was enough.
Matteo saw it.
So did Elena.
“You know this book,” she said.
Caruso looked at her.
“You should not have opened it.”
Matteo’s face hardened.
“Why?”
Caruso smiled.
“Because now everyone who wants it will come for you.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Who?”
Caruso looked at Matteo.
“Ask your dead father.”
Matteo grabbed him.
“What did you say?”
Caruso laughed.
“Your father knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That the Belladonna house was built on something rotten.”
Matteo released him.
Caruso continued.
“Your father wanted to destroy the network.”
“And you stopped him.”
“No.”
Caruso smiled.
“Your mother did.”
Silence.
Matteo’s face went pale.
“My mother died when I was twelve.”
“Did she?”
Elena looked at Matteo.
He looked back at her.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside.
Dozens of them.
Gabriel drew his pistol.
“Men are surrounding the house.”
Matteo looked at Caruso.
“You planned this.”
Caruso smiled.
“No.”
He leaned closer.
“They did.”
The windows shattered.
Gunfire erupted.
Matteo pulled Elena behind a stone pillar.
Gabriel shouted orders.
Guards returned fire.
Smoke filled the hall.
Caruso disappeared.
Elena looked toward the doorway.
“Where did he go?”
Matteo’s jaw tightened.
“Downstairs.”
They followed.
But Caruso was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A bloodstained envelope.
Matteo opened it.
Inside was a letter addressed to Elena.
She read the first line.
Your father did not die by accident.
