She Walked Past the Mafia Boss Without Looking Back, and His Next Order Shocked Everyone
Chapter 11
The river was already burning.
Flames climbed the sides of three Belladonna ships.
Men ran along the docks.
Horses screamed.
Smoke covered the water.
Caruso stood at the end of the pier.
He held a torch.
Matteo approached.
“You’re finished.”
Caruso laughed.
“No.”
He pointed toward the burning ships.
“Your history is finished.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You won’t destroy the evidence.”
Caruso smiled.
“You brought the ledger.”
“Yes.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
Caruso looked at Matteo.
“She always was stubborn.”
Matteo drew his pistol.
“Let her go.”
Caruso laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
He pointed behind Elena.
Several men had surrounded her.
She had not noticed them.
One grabbed her.
Matteo’s expression changed.
Caruso smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Elena struggled.
“Don’t shoot!”
Matteo lowered his weapon.
Caruso stepped forward.
“Your order was strange that night.”
Matteo looked at him.
“What order?”
“The one that shocked everyone.”
Caruso smiled.
“You told your men to protect her.”
Elena stared.
Caruso continued.
“You didn’t know why, did you?”
Matteo’s jaw tightened.
“Because her father saved me.”
“No.”
Caruso shook his head.
“Because she was the only person who could open the final account.”
Elena froze.
“What account?”
Caruso laughed.
“The one your father hid.”
He pointed toward the river.
“One ship remains.”
A small black vessel emerged from the smoke.
On its deck was a wooden chest.
Caruso’s chest.
The final evidence.
Caruso ordered his men to bring it forward.
But before they could, a pistol shot rang out.
The man carrying the chest fell.
The chest crashed onto the dock.
Elena looked toward the shooter.
Matteo’s mother.
She smiled.
“Run.”
