She Walked Past the Mafia Boss Without Looking Back, and His Next Order Shocked Everyone
Chapter 4
Elena’s father had been dead for eleven years.
His name was Marco Moretti.
He had been a cooper.
But before that, he had worked on the river.
Matteo remembered him.
Years ago, Matteo had been ambushed near the docks.
Marco had pulled him from the water.
Then disappeared before Matteo could repay him.
Matteo had spent years searching.
He eventually learned Marco had died.
But Marco had left behind something.
A ledger.
A ledger containing the names of men who had been stealing from Matteo’s father.
The problem was that no one knew where it was.
Until now.
Elena had found it.
She did not know what she had.
That was what frightened Matteo.
Someone else did.
The following morning, Matteo went to Elena’s house.
She opened the door and froze.
“What do you want?”
“I want to speak about your father.”
Her expression hardened.
“My father has been dead eleven years.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because he saved my life.”
Elena stared at him.
“You’re Matteo Belladonna.”
“Yes.”
“My father said your name once.”
“What did he say?”
“He said you were dangerous.”
Matteo smiled faintly.
“He wasn’t wrong.”
Elena almost closed the door.
Matteo stopped her.
“Someone is looking for a ledger.”
She said nothing.
“You have it.”
“No.”
“Your father hid it.”
Elena looked away.
“How do you know?”
“Because the men searching for it have already killed two people.”
Silence.
Elena finally stepped aside.
Matteo entered.
She led him to the kitchen.
From beneath a loose floorboard, she retrieved a leather book.
Matteo did not touch it.
Instead, he looked at Elena.
“Where did you find that?”
“My father left it.”
“What does it say?”
“I haven’t read everything.”
“Why?”
She stared at him.
“Because the first page has your name.”
Matteo went still.
Elena opened the book.
The first entry was dated twenty years earlier.
The second contained names.
The third contained payments.
Then Elena turned the page.
A line was written in her father’s hand.
If Matteo ever sees this, tell him the enemy is not outside his house.
Matteo’s expression changed.
He knew exactly what that meant.
The traitor was inside his organization.
And Elena’s father had known who it was.
