Ava’s mother, Victoria Sinclair, disapproved of Daniel immediately.
“You need someone more established.”
Daniel remained calm.
“I’m here to protect Ava.”
Victoria looked at him.
“And after that?”
He didn’t answer.
She noticed.
So did Ava.
Later, Ava confronted her mother.
“He’s not using me.”
“I didn’t say he was.”
“You implied it.”
Victoria sighed.
“You’re famous. He’s a security professional.”
“He treats me like a normal person.”
“That’s exactly what worries me.”
Ava frowned.
“Why?”
“Because you are not living a normal life.”
Ava walked away.
Daniel found her outside.
“Your mother doesn’t like me.”
“She doesn’t know you.”
“Maybe she knows the world better than I do.”
Ava looked at him.
“Do you regret this?”
“Working for you?”
“No.”
He hesitated.
“Not yet.”
She smiled.
“Not yet?”
He looked at her.
“You’re dangerous.”
She laughed.
“How?”
“You make me forget I’m supposed to keep my distance.”
The words hung between them.
This time neither ran.
Ava reached for his hand.
Daniel looked down.
