She Hired a Cold Bodyguard to Protect Her From the World — Then He Became the Only Place She Felt Safe
Chapter 2
Daniel quickly discovered that protecting Ava was more difficult than he expected.
She hated being followed.
She hated being told where to stand.
She hated changing plans.
And she especially hated Daniel’s habit of appearing behind her whenever she tried to sneak away.
“I need coffee.”
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll come with you.”
“I can buy coffee.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you coming?”
“Because someone has been tracking your schedule.”
Ava sighed.
“You’re impossible.”
“Probably.”
He followed her into the café.
Ava ordered coffee.
Then bought an extra pastry.
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s not for me.”
“I didn’t think it was.”
She placed it into the hands of an elderly homeless man sitting outside.
Daniel watched silently.
Later that afternoon, Ava visited a children’s hospital.
The event wasn’t on her official schedule.
Daniel was surprised.
“You came here without publicity?”
“Why would I need cameras?”
“Most celebrities would want the coverage.”
“Then I’m glad I’m not most celebrities.”
She spent two hours talking to sick children.
One little girl asked for a photograph.
Ava sat beside her.
“No cameras,” she said softly. “Just us.”
Daniel watched.
The woman he had expected to be spoiled and demanding was not there.
Instead, he saw someone patient.
Gentle.
Real.
On the drive home, he said:
“You’re different than I expected.”
Ava looked out the window.
“What did you expect?”
“Someone who loved attention.”
She smiled sadly.
“I like being an actress.”
She paused.
“I don’t like being watched.”
Daniel looked at her through the rearview mirror.
For the first time, he wondered how much loneliness existed behind the fame.
