Chapter 7

Mia dropped behind the sofa.

Adrian pulled her down.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Mia.”

“I can help.”

“You’re a nurse.”

“Exactly.”

Another shot shattered a window.

Guards rushed through the hallway.

Victor disappeared.

Adrian stood.

Mia grabbed his sleeve.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“You’re bleeding.”

He glanced down.

A small cut ran across his forearm.

“I’m fine.”

“Sit.”

“Mia—”

“Sit down.”

He actually obeyed.

She cleaned the wound while gunfire echoed outside.

“You’re insane,” Adrian muttered.

“You’ve said that.”

“You don’t listen.”

“You’re noticing.”

Marcus arrived minutes later.

“The attackers are gone.”

“Victor?” Adrian asked.

“Missing.”

Adrian looked at Mia.

“She was right.”

Mia frowned.

“About what?”

“Victor.”

Marcus placed a file on the table.

“We found this in his room.”

Inside was a photograph.

Adrian’s father.

Victor.

And another man.

Mia recognized him.

“Who’s that?”

Adrian’s face became expressionless.

“My uncle.”

“Your uncle?”

“Gabriel Bellini.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Mia looked at the photograph.

“Then why is his name on the back?”

Adrian turned it over.

A handwritten note.

The boy knows nothing.

Adrian stared at the words.

“Who is the boy?”

Mia asked.

Adrian didn’t answer.

Then Marcus said:

“There’s more.”

He handed Adrian another photograph.

This one showed a younger Adrian.

Fourteen years old.

Standing beside his father’s body.

Mia looked at him.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Who took that photograph?”

“I don’t know.”

Mia noticed something in the background.

A man standing near the oak tree.

Victor.

And someone else.

She pointed.

“Who’s behind him?”

Adrian looked.

His face changed.

“I know him.”

“Who?”

“Father’s attorney.”

Mia felt a chill.

“Isn’t he dead too?”

“Yes.”

Adrian slowly folded the photograph.

“Apparently not everyone who was supposed to be dead is dead.”
