No Nurse Lasted a Week with the Ruthless Mafia Boss — Until the Poor Nurse Broke the Rules
Chapter 10
Someone had searched Mia’s room.
Nothing was stolen.
Only one thing had been moved.
A photograph of Mia’s father.
She kept it inside her nursing-school graduation book.
Mia picked it up.
Her hands trembled.
“Why would they care about my father?”
Adrian took the photograph.
“Who was he?”
“David Carter.”
“Occupation?”
“Paramedic.”
“When did he die?”
“Eight years ago.”
“How?”
“Car accident.”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
Mia saw his expression change.
“What?”
He turned the picture around.
There was a date written on the back.
Adrian recognized it.
“This was the night my father died.”
Mia stared.
“That can’t be.”
“Where did your father work?”
“County emergency services.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“My father had an emergency driver that night.”
Mia stepped backward.
“Are you saying our fathers knew each other?”
“I think they did.”
They searched old records.
David Carter had responded to a call involving Adrian’s father.
The official report said Adrian’s father was already dead when the ambulance arrived.
But a handwritten note in David’s old records said something different.
Patient alive upon arrival.
Mia’s heart pounded.
“Someone changed the report.”
Adrian nodded.
“Why?”
“Because if your father was alive, then he could have told someone what happened.”
Mia sat down.
“My father knew.”
“Yes.”
“And he died eight years later.”
Adrian didn’t answer.
She looked at him.
“Do you think they killed him too?”
“I don’t know.”
“But you think it’s possible.”
“Yes.”
Mia looked away.
Adrian sat beside her.
For the first time, there was no ruthless businessman.
No feared crime boss.
Just a man who understood exactly what it meant to lose a parent without knowing why.
Mia whispered:
“I thought I was taking this job because I needed money.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Maybe you were brought here for another reason.”
She looked up.
“What do you mean?”
“The nurse before you.”
“What about her?”
“She wasn’t supposed to be hired.”
Mia frowned.
“Then why was she?”
Adrian showed her the employment records.
Someone had deliberately selected every nurse who had worked for him.
But Mia’s file was different.
It had been added manually.
By someone outside the medical department.
Someone using an old Bellini access code.
Mia stared at the screen.
“Who?”
Adrian looked at the authorization.
“Lucian.”
“But he’s dead.”
Adrian shook his head.
“That’s what everyone believes.”
