Olivia returned to Sterling Meridian the following Monday.
Victoria was waiting in the lobby.
“I’m sorry.”
Olivia stopped.
“For firing me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victoria took a breath.
“Because I was wrong.”
Olivia studied her.
“That’s rare.”
Victoria smiled.
“I know.”
They walked upstairs together.
Victoria explained everything.
The performance reports.
The misunderstanding.
Her personal resentment.
“I shouldn’t have allowed it into my work.”
Olivia nodded.
“No.”
“I know.”
Then Victoria said:
“I also didn’t know Ethan owned the company.”
Olivia looked at her.
“You know now.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Victoria smiled sadly.
“I think I’m starting to understand why he kept it secret.”
Olivia frowned.
“Why?”
“Because money ruins people’s ability to see each other clearly.”
Olivia thought about it.
“Maybe.”
Victoria looked at her.
“He loves you.”
Olivia froze.
“How do you know?”
“Because he looked at me like I was a former employee.”
She laughed.
“Not an old love.”
Olivia smiled faintly.
“That sounds like him.”
There was a pause.
Then Victoria asked:
“Does he tell you everything?”
Olivia looked at her.
“No.”
Victoria nodded.
“Neither did he tell me.”
They stood quietly.
For the first time, they were not rivals.
They were two women who had loved the same man at different points in his life.
One had lost him.
The other had built a life with him.
Neither had won anything.
Life had simply made different choices.
Olivia returned to her office.
Her employees welcomed her back.
She began rebuilding her department.
Victoria helped.
