My Grandfather Left Me a Diary in an Abandoned Basement — The Last Page Had My Name on It

CHAPTER 13

Maya thought the mystery was finally over.

She was wrong.

The pastor told her Ethan had been raised under another name.

He had no idea he was a Bennett.

But he had recently started asking questions about his childhood.

Someone had noticed.

Someone had begun following him.

Maya returned to Pennsylvania.

The farmhouse felt different now.

Less haunted.

More like a message waiting to be understood.

She went into the basement one final time.

There was something she had never checked.

The wall behind the old filing cabinet.

Samuel had written a single sentence there.

Never open the door beneath the floor.

Maya remembered the hidden hatch.

But this was different.

She searched.

Eventually, she found a metal ring beneath the wooden floor.

Daniel stood beside her.

“You sure?”

“No.”

She pulled.

A section of flooring opened.

Beneath it was another staircase.

They descended.

At the bottom was a tiny room.

There was no evidence.

No money.

No weapons.

Only one chair.

And a tape recorder.

Maya pressed play.

Samuel’s voice returned.

“If you’ve reached this room, then Haven is over.”

A pause.

“Or so I hoped.”

Maya frowned.

Samuel continued.

“Thomas Hale was never the mastermind.”

Daniel looked at her.

Maya felt her stomach tighten.

“Someone above him funded everything.”

The recording became distorted.

Then Samuel said the name.

Maya froze.

It was the name of someone she knew.

Someone who had spent years pretending to help her.

Someone who had been present since the beginning.

The tape ended before he could explain.

Maya looked at Daniel.

“Who?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

His phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

“What’s wrong?”

He turned the phone toward her.

A message had arrived.

I KNOW YOU FOUND THE LAST ROOM.

A second message appeared.

NOW ASK YOUR MOTHER WHO REALLY ORDERED YOUR FATHER’S DEATH.

Maya stared at the screen.

Then slowly turned toward the staircase.

Her mother was standing at the top.

She was crying.

And in her hand was an old photograph.

Maya whispered:

“Mom?”

Her mother looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

Her mother’s voice trembled.

“Because your grandfather never knew the whole truth.”

She held up the photograph.

“Neither did I.”

Maya stared at the image.

There were four people in it.

Her father.

Her grandfather.

Her mother.

And a fourth person whose face had been scratched away.

On the back were three words.

HE IS STILL ALIVE.

Maya looked at Daniel.

The mystery was not over.

It had only changed shape.

And somewhere beyond the farmhouse, someone was watching the lights come on.

Waiting for Maya to discover the final secret.
