My Grandfather Left Me a Diary in an Abandoned Basement — The Last Page Had My Name on It
CHAPTER 11
Maya couldn’t speak.
Her mother looked at her.
“He’s lying.”
Hale smiled.
“Am I?”
He placed a cassette on the table.
“Ask Samuel.”
Maya stared at it.
The tape was labeled:
FINAL RECORDING.
Daniel found an old recorder.
He pressed play.
Samuel’s voice filled the room.
“I know what they believe.”
A pause.
“They think I betrayed my family.”
Maya closed her eyes.
“But Haven cannot simply be destroyed.”
Samuel continued.
“If the documents disappear, they will rebuild it somewhere else.”
Maya listened.
“So I hid the evidence inside the system.”
Daniel looked at her.
Samuel had planted the records in places that would eventually expose the entire network.
But there was one problem.
Someone had to survive long enough to reveal them.
Samuel’s voice became softer.
“Maya.”
She froze.
“If you are hearing this, you are old enough to understand.”
A pause.
“You were never the reason Haven existed.”
Maya began crying.
“You were the reason I destroyed it.”
The recording continued.
“Your father died protecting your mother.”
“Your mother disappeared protecting you.”
“And I stayed behind to make sure the people responsible believed they had won.”
The tape ended.
Hale looked furious.
“You don’t understand.”
Maya stood.
“I understand enough.”
Hale raised his gun.
Then police sirens erupted outside.
Federal agents stormed the building.
Daniel had secretly transmitted the recordings before they entered.
Hale was arrested.
Morris survived long enough to be arrested too.
For the first time in decades, Project Haven became public.
But there was one unanswered question.
What happened to Samuel?
Maya returned to the farmhouse.
She reread the diary.
The final page had never made sense.
Now she noticed something.
The handwriting changed halfway through.
The last paragraph wasn’t Samuel’s.
It was her mother’s.
If Maya finds this diary, tell her the truth.
Below it was another sentence.
But don’t tell her everything.
Maya stared.
Why would her mother hide something from her?
Then she turned the page.
A photograph fell out.
It showed Samuel standing beside a young woman.
Her mother.
And between them was a little girl.
Maya.
But the date on the photograph was impossible.
2001.
Maya was supposed to have been living with her father in another state that year.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“There’s something wrong.”
Maya nodded.
“Yes.”
Then she saw the final detail.
A second child stood behind her.
A boy.
Someone Maya had never seen before.
On the back of the photograph were five words:
He survived too. Find him.
