My Grandfather Left Me a Diary in an Abandoned Basement — The Last Page Had My Name on It

CHAPTER 2

Maya didn’t sleep that night.

She took the diary to her apartment and placed it on the kitchen table.

For hours, she read.

Samuel’s handwriting became increasingly frantic as the entries progressed.

At first, he described meetings with developers.

Then politicians.

Then police officers.

Then people whose names Maya recognized from streets, buildings, and scholarships around town.

The Bennett farmhouse wasn’t far from a small Pennsylvania community called Millbrook.

For decades, the Hale family had controlled much of the area’s development.

Their name was everywhere.

Hale Construction.

Hale Medical Center.

Hale Foundation.

Samuel had worked for them once.

According to the diary, that was where everything began.

Maya turned a page.

March 12, 1999.

They told us Haven would create jobs.

Another page.

April 2.

It isn’t a development project.

Another.

May 18.

Three families refused.

Then nothing for six pages.

Maya frowned.

The pages had been carefully torn out.

Not ripped accidentally.

Removed.

She continued.

September 7, 1999.

Daniel knows.

Maya froze.

Daniel.

Her childhood friend, Daniel Reed, was now the county archivist.

She called him.

He answered immediately.

“You’re awake.”

“So are you.”

“I work with old records. Sleep is optional.”

She hesitated.

“I found something.”

“How bad?”

“I don’t know yet.”

She sent him a photograph of the diary.

There was a long pause.

Then Daniel called back.

“Where did you find this?”

“My grandfather’s basement.”

“Samuel Bennett?”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s voice changed.

“Maya, your grandfather’s name appears in a sealed county file.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What file?”

“I don’t know. I’ve only seen the reference.”

“Reference to what?”

“Something called Project Haven.”

Maya stared at the diary.

“That’s exactly what this is about.”

Silence.

“Bring it to me tomorrow,” Daniel said.

“Why?”

“Because if this is what I think it is, you shouldn’t be reading it alone.”

Maya almost laughed.

“You’re making this sound like a conspiracy.”

“I hope it is.”

“Why?”

“Because the alternative is worse.”

She didn’t ask what he meant.

Instead, she turned another page.

At the bottom of the entry was a sentence written much darker than everything else.

If they ever find this diary, they’ll know I failed.

Maya’s heart began pounding.

Then she noticed something beneath the sentence.

A second line had been written in smaller handwriting.

It wasn’t Samuel’s.

But if Maya finds it, tell her the truth.

Maya stopped breathing.

She had never seen the handwriting before.

And she suddenly understood the real question.

Why had someone written her name in a diary belonging to a man who had died before she was old enough to understand what was happening?
